श्रीशुक उवाच अथ गोपीरनुज्ञाप्य यशोदां नन्दमेव च । गोपानामन्‍त्र्य दाशार्हो यास्यन्नारुरुहे रथम् ॥ ६४ ॥

śrī-śuka uvāca atha gopīr anujṣāpya yaśodāṁ nandam eva ca gopān āmantrya dāśārho yāsyann āruruhe ratham

Synonyms

śṛī — śukaḥ uvāca — Śukadeva Gosvāmī said ; atha — then ; gopīḥ — of the gopīs ; anujṣāpya — taking permission ; yaśodām — of mother Yaśodā ; nandam — King Nanda ; eva ca — also ; gopān — of the cowherds ; āmantrya — taking leave ; dāśārhaḥ — Uddhava, descendant of Daśārha ; yāsyan — being about to leave ; āruruhe — mounted ; ratham — his chariot .

Translation

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Uddhava, the descendant of Daśārha, then took permission to leave from the gopīs and from mother Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja. He bade farewell to all the cowherd men and, about to depart, mounted his chariot.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Uddhava, the descendant of Daśārha, then took permission to leave from the gopīs and from mother Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja. He bade farewell to all the cowherd men and, about to depart, mounted his chariot. KB 10.47.64 After living in Vṛndāvana for some time, Uddhava desired to go back to Kṛṣṇa, and he begged permission to leave from Nanda Mahārāja and Yaśodā. He had a farewell meeting with the gopīs, and, taking permission from them also, he mounted his chariot to start for Mathurā.

I offer respects to Uddhava, the best of Kṛṣṇa’s dear devotees, who prayed for birth as grass in order to touch the dust from the gopis’ lotus feet. The word atha indicates another time. The word ca indicates everyone. He asked permission to leave after satisfying everyone’s heart in order of what he perceived was the greatness of their prema: the gopīs, Yaśodā, Nanda, and the cowherds. Since the main purpose was consoling everyone according to the means mentioned previously, he called the cowherds and let them hear Nanda’s permission for him to go. He called out to them, “O cowherd! They have given their permission. Now I am going.” In this way he went to each cowherd and spoke. Uddhava is called the descendant of Dāśārha because he was knowledgeable of all conduct, and could even solve the problems in Vraja.

Ca indicates all others. He said farewell to all the male and female servants, cows and other entities. In order of degree of prema he spoke to each group, starting with the gopīs. To benefit the Yadus (dāśarhaḥ) he departed. By helping all others only, the Yadus would be in danger. Āruruhe means he started to mount the chariot.
