ता आशिष: प्रयुञ्जानाश्चिरं पाहीति बालके । हरिद्राचूर्णतैलाद्भ‍ि: सिञ्चन्त्योऽजनमुज्जगु: ॥ १२ ॥

tā āśiṣaḥ prayuṣjānāś ciraṁ pāhīti bālake haridrā-cūrṇa-tailādbhiḥ siṣcantyo ’janam ujjaguḥ

Synonyms

tāḥ — all the women, the wives and daughters of the cowherd men ; āśiṣaḥ — blessings ; prayuṣjānāḥ — offering ; ciram — for a long time ; pāhi — may You become the King of Vraja and maintain all its inhabitants ; iti — thus ; bālake — unto the newborn child ; haridrā — cūrṇa — powder of turmeric ; taila — adbhiḥ — mixed with oil ; siṣcantyaḥ — sprinkling ; ajanam — the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is unborn ; ujjaguḥ — offered prayers .

Translation

Offering blessings to the newborn child, Kṛṣṇa, the wives and daughters of the cowherd men said, “May You become the King of Vraja and long maintain all its inhabitants.” They sprinkled a mixture of turmeric powder, oil and water upon the birthless Supreme Lord and offered their prayers.

Offering blessings to the newborn child, Kṛṣṇa, the wives and daughters of the cowherd men said, "May You become the King of Vraja and long maintain all its inhabitants." They sprinkled a mixture of turmeric powder, oil and water upon the birthless Supreme Lord and offered their prayers. KB 10.5.12 They blessed the child: “Dear child, You live long just to protect us.” While they were blessing child Kṛṣṇa in this way, they offered a mixture of turmeric powder, oil, yogurt, milk and water. They sprinkled this mixture not only on the body of child Kṛṣṇa but on all other persons who were present there.

Entering the maternity ward they said "May you protect us." This means that, being the king’s son, when he becomes king, he should protect them. Another reading is "Ciran jiva, live long life," said out of parental affection as a blessing. Then going out side, they sprinkled each other with turmeric and oil mixed with water, and began singing in loud voices.

In joy they said “Please protect us for a long time.” By that they prayed that he remain wealthy for all time, and prayed that he associate with them and be pleased with them. Bālake means “unto a very small child.” They prayed in this way because he was a helpless child, or they prayed out of great prema, even though he was a small baby. They loudly (ut) sang auspicious songs or they praised him so that he would be safe. Instead of pāhi sometimes jīva (live) is seen, uttered out of compassion. Not only did the women give blessings. Everyone did so.
