अवाद्यन्त विचित्राणि वादित्राणि महोत्सवे । कृष्णे विश्वेश्वरेऽनन्ते नन्दस्य व्रजमागते ॥ १३ ॥

Verse text

avādyanta vicitrāṇi vāditrāṇi mahotsave kṛṣṇe viśveśvare ’nante nandasya vrajam āgate

Synonyms

avādyanta — vibrated in celebration of Vasudeva’s son ; vicitrāṇi — various ; vāditrāṇi — musical instruments ; mahā — utsave — in the great festival ; kṛṣṇe — when Lord Kṛṣṇa ; viśva — īśvare — the master of the entire cosmic manifestation ; anante — unlimitedly ; nandasya — of Mahārāja Nanda ; vrajam — at the pasturing place ; āgate — had so arrived .

Translation

Now that the all-pervading, unlimited Lord Kṛṣṇa, the master of the cosmic manifestation, had arrived within the estate of Mahārāja Nanda, various types of musical instruments resounded to celebrate the great festival.

Now that the all-pervading, unlimited Lord Kṛṣṇa, the master of the cosmic manifestation, had arrived within the estate of Mahārāja Nanda, various types of musical instruments resounded to celebrate the great festival. KB 10.5.13 Also on that auspicious occasion, there were different bands of expert musicians playing.

Purport

The Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (4.7) : yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham “Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion — at that time I descend Myself.” Whenever Kṛṣṇa comes, once in a day of Brahmā, He comes to the house of Nanda Mahārāja in Vṛndāvana. Kṛṣṇa is the master of all creation ( sarva-loka-maheśvaram ). Therefore, not only in the neighborhood of Nanda Mahārāja’s estate, but all over the universe — and in all the other universes — musical sounds celebrated the auspicious arrival of the Lord.

Instruments began playing in the three worlds—svarga, earth and hell, because Krsna, the Lord of the universe (visvesvara), had appeared. Because Krsna is unlimited, unlimited instruments began to sound.

Instruments were played by musicians. There were various instruments such as vīṇas, drums, flutes, karatālas and gongs. Besides the variety of instruments, there was variety in how the musicians played. When the musicians of Vraja played, all others in the universe also played spontaneously. The reason is given. This was at a festival greater than any other (mahotsave). The reasons for the festival are given. Kṛṣṇa, Bhagavān, had personally appeared with the glory of his attractive qualities. He had all influence (viśveśvare) and had unlimited power and sweetness (anante). He had appeared in his own place, the supreme place endowed with an ocean of nectar of the highest prema (nandasya vrajam). Instead of īyūṣi (appeared) sometimes āgate (came) is seen.
