रोहिणी च महाभागा नन्दगोपाभिनन्दिता । व्यचरद् दिव्यवासस्रक्कण्ठाभरणभूषिता ॥ १७ ॥

rohiṇī ca mahā-bhāgā nanda-gopābhinanditā vyacarad divya-vāsa-srak- kaṇṭhābharaṇa-bhūṣitā

Synonyms

rohiṇī Rohiṇī, the mother of Baladeva ; ca also ; mahā bhāgā — the most fortunate mother of Baladeva (greatly fortunate because of having the opportunity to raise Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma together) ; nanda gopā — abhinanditā — being honored by Mahārāja Nanda and mother Yaśodā ; vyacarat was busy wandering here and there ; divya beautiful ; vāsa with a dress ; srak with a garland ; kaṇṭha ābharaṇa — and with an ornament covering the neck ; bhūṣitā decorated .

Translation

The most fortunate Rohiṇī, the mother of Baladeva, was honored by Nanda Mahārāja and Yaśodā, and thus she also dressed gorgeously and decorated herself with a necklace, a garland and other ornaments. She was busy wandering here and there to receive the women who were guests at the festival.

The most fortunate Rohiṇī, the mother of Baladeva, was honored by Nanda Mahārāja and Yaśodā, and thus she also dressed gorgeously and decorated herself with a necklace, a garland and other ornaments. She was busy wandering here and there to receive the women who were guests at the festival. KB 10.5.17 Rohiṇīdevī, the mother of Balarāma, was the most fortunate wife of Vasudeva. She was away from her husband, yet just to congratulate Mahārāja Nanda on the occasion of the birth ceremony of his son, Kṛṣṇa, she dressed herself very nicely. Wearing a garland, a necklace and other bodily ornaments, she appeared on the scene and moved hither and thither. According to the Vedic system, a woman whose husband is not at home does not dress herself very nicely. But although Rohiṇī’s husband was away, she still dressed herself very nicely on this occasion.

Rohiṇī, another wife of Vasudeva’s, was also kept under the care of Nanda Mahārāja with her son Baladeva. Because her husband was imprisoned by Kaṁsa, she was not very happy, but on the occasion of Kṛṣṇa-janmāṣṭamī, Nandotsava, when Nanda Mahārāja gave dresses and ornaments to others, he also gave gorgeous garments and ornaments to Rohiṇī so that she could take part in the festival. Thus she also was busy receiving the women who were guests. Because of her good fortune in being able to raise Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma together, she is described as mahā-bhāgā, greatly fortunate.

Rohini is addressed as most fortunate, maha bhago, because among all of Vasudeva’s wives, she alone attained the opportunity to see Krsna’s childhood pastimes. Nanda gopa means Nanda raja, for gopa also means king, according to the Amara Kosa dictionary. (go means earth as well as cow. Gopa means protector of the earth.) Abhinandita (greeted) means that Nanda praised her saying, "because of your coming here, my child was born." Vyacarat indicates that she went around, giving proper respect to the gathered women. She was decorated with beautiful clothing and ornaments given by Nanda and Yasoda. Because of the bliss of celebrating Krsna’s birth, she forgot her sorrow of her husband’s condition in prison and separation from him.

Rohiṇī means “she who produces (rohayati) great bliss.” Now the meaning of her name had reached perfection. She was had greater fortunate than Vasudeva’s other wives and even Devakī, because she attained the sweet pastimes of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma by the birth of Balarāma to her and the birth Kṛṣṇa to her dear friend Yaśodā. Nanda, king of Gokula welcomed her by saying “Only by your coming to Vraja have I been able to have a son.” The word gopa can mean king. Or she was welcomed not only by Nanda but by the other cowherds (gopā). She was decorated with cloth rare to this earth and ornaments given by Nanda out of joy, and she forgot all sorrows by his joy. She moved about (vyacarat) here and there with affection doing various tasks at this great festival. Because of her joy at Kṛṣṇa’s birth, there no mention of Rohiṇī’s new born child sleeping in her house.

Rohiṇī was especially honored since she suffered separation from Vasudeva. She was most fortunate because she experienced the appearance of the Lord, and was never separated from Kṛṣṇa, and because she lived in Vraja. She was honored by Nanda, the protector of cows and earth (gopa), a great king. Or she was honored by Nanda and the cowherds. Or mahābhāgāḥ can refer to Yāśodā or all the cowherd women. Or Rohiṇī was honored or made completely happy by Yāśodā and the other women, the cowherds and Nanda. Though she did not want it, because of separation, she was ornamented with good cloth and decorations. Other decorations are also indicated. Yāśodā and others gave her cloth superior to what she was wearing (divya). She moved about (vyacarat) here and there with affection, doing various tasks at this great festival. Because of her joy at Kṛṣṇa’s birth, there is no mention of Rohiṇī’s newborn child sleeping in her house.
