prāṇāvaśeṣa utsṛṣṭo dviḍbhir hata-bala-prabhaḥ smaran virūpa-karaṇaṁ vitathātma-manorathaḥ cakre bhojakaṭaṁ nāma nivāsāya mahat puram

Translation

Left with only his life air, cast out by his enemies and deprived of his strength and bodily radiance, Rukmī could not forget how he had been disfigured. In frustration he constructed for his residence a large city, which he called Bhojakaṭa.

Left with only his life air, cast out by his enemies and deprived of his strength and bodily radiance, Rukmī could not forget how he had been disfigured. In frustration he constructed for his residence a large city, which he called Bhojakaṭa. KB 10.54.51-52 As far as Rukmī was concerned, his promise was not fulfilled, nor was his mission successful. He had come from home with his soldiers and military phalanx to defeat Kṛṣṇa and release his sister, but on the contrary he lost all his soldiers and military strength. He was personally degraded and very sorry, but by the grace of the Lord he could continue his life to its fixed destination. Because he was a kṣatriya, he could remember his promise that he would not return to his capital city, Kuṇḍina, without killing Kṛṣṇa and releasing his sister, which he had failed to do; therefore, he decided in anger not to return to his capital city, and he constructed a small cottage in the village known as Bhojakaṭa, where he resided for the rest of his life.

While walking away from Krsna Rukmi was insulted by the Yadu soldiers with abuse, curses, and chastisement. (dvidbhir hata bala prabhah).

He had previously lost his strength, armies and luster because of his enemies. Then he felt his desires thwarted. Then because of being disfigured, he was left in only his life airs. Then he was freed. Then he began remembering his disfigurement. That is the order. The verse does not list the events in order because of feelings of disrespect in describing his condition. The verse shows that he was completely disrespected. Balam means his armies and strength. Bhoja means one who enjoys-- a prince or a member of a royal family of Vidarbha. Tatreśvareṇa kratha-kaiśikānāṁ bhojena dūto raghave visṛṣṭa: King Bhoja, the lord of Kratha-kaishika province, namely Vidarbha kingdom, sent an invitation through a devoted messenger to Raghu. (Raghu-vaṁśa) Kaṭa means an agreement or oath according to Nānārtha-varga. Thus the meaning of Bhoja-kaṭa is the place where the Bhoja king made an oath. Kaṭa also means the cremation place of the Vidarbha prince as in the following example. Kaṭa-dhūmasya saurabhyam: there was the smell of smoke from the burning of Pūtanā. (SB 10.6.41)

He was left with only his life because his strength and abilities or army had been destroyed. His desire to defeat Kṛṣṇa was made false (vitatha). These were successively greater causes for constructing his city. This city was bigger than Bhīṣmaka’s city. It was called Bhojakaṭa because it was caused by an oath to conquer the Yadus (Bhojas). Kaṭa means an agreement or oath according to the dictionary. Actually it was as insignificant as straw (kaṭa) for the Yadus.
