आविध्य शूलं तरसा गरुत्मते निरस्य वक्त्रैर्व्यनदत्स पञ्चभि: । स रोदसी सर्वदिशोऽम्बरं महा- नापूरयन्नण्डकटाहमावृणोत् ॥ ८ ॥

āvidhya śūlaṁ tarasā garutmate nirasya vaktrair vyanadat sa paṣcabhiḥ sa rodasī sarva-diśo ’mbaraṁ mahān āpūrayann aṇḍa-kaṭāham āvṛṇot

Synonyms

āvidhya — whirling about ; śūlam — his trident ; tarasā — with great force ; garutmate — at Garuḍa ; nirasya — throwing it ; vaktraiḥ — with his mouths ; vyanadat — roared ; saḥ — he ; paṣcabhiḥ — five ; saḥ — that ; rodasī — the earth and sky ; sarva — all ; diśaḥ — the directions ; ambaram — outer space ; mahān — the great (roar) ; āpūrayan — filling ; aṇda — of the egglike covering of the universe ; kaṭāham — the pot ; āvṛṇot — covered .

Translation

Mura whirled his trident and then hurled it fiercely at Garuḍa, roaring from all five mouths. The sound filled the earth and sky, all directions and the limits of outer space, until it reverberated against the very shell of the universe.

Mura whirled his trident and then hurled it fiercely at Garuḍa, roaring from all five mouths. The sound filled the earth and sky, all directions and the limits of outer space, until it reverberated against the very shell of the universe. KB 10.59.8 First of all he attacked the carrier of Kṛṣṇa, Garuḍa, by whirling and then throwing his trident, and through his five mouths he vibrated sounds like the roaring of a lion. These roaring vibrations spread all over the atmosphere until they extended all over the world and into outer space, up and down and out to the ten directions, rumbling throughout the entire universe.

Bhauma waved his trident and made ferocious sounds (vyanada). That great sound (maha) filled the universe.

He hurled his trident with all his strength. The roaring filled the whole universe, including the heavens and earth (rodasī). Instead of ambaram sometimes antaram is seen. This means Pātāla.

Since sound arises in ether, the sound went to the five upper planets including Svarga since the space was large and went upwards. Not able to leave the universe, the sound returned down to earth and then expanded in all directions. Then after filling everything above, it entered a hole into the lower planets. Thus the sound gradually filled (pūrayan) the universe completely (ā).
