Translation
Nanda Mahārāja and the other gopas exclaimed: My dear friends, you must know that Ānakadundubhi, Vasudeva, has become a great saint or a master of mystic power. Otherwise how could he have foreseen this calamity and predicted it to us?

Nanda Mahārāja recalled the prophecy of Vasudeva and considered him a great sage and mystic yogī; otherwise, how could he have foretold an incident that happened during his absence from Vṛndāvana?
Purport
This verse illustrates the difference between
kṣatriyas
and innocent
vaiśyas.
By studying the political situation, Vasudeva could see what would happen, whereas Nanda Mahārāja, the king of the agriculturalists, could only guess that Vasudeva was a great saintly person and had developed mystic powers. Vasudeva actually had all mystic powers under his control; otherwise he could not have become the father of Kṛṣṇa. But in fact he foresaw the calamities in Vraja by studying Kaṁsa’s political activities and thus warned Nanda Mahārāja to take precautions, although Nanda Mahārāja thought that Vasudeva had predicted this incident through wonderful mystic powers. By mystic powers gained through the practice of
haṭha-yoga,
one can study and understand the future.

"Certainly (nunam) Vasudeva is a rsi in our family; being all knowing, he has predicted correctly. Through practice of astanga yoga (yogesa) he has developed the eyes to see the future. He shines preminently (sam asa)."

They talked among themselves in astonishment. Nūnam indicates conjecture. Vasudeva was not like this before. Now he has become a real sage because he makes authoritative statements like the sages. “But we cannot see the symptoms of a sage in him.” Then perhaps he is a master of yoga—fixed on internal worship. The words sañjātaḥ and samāsa both have the affix sam. They indicate “being fixed.” What is the reason for saying this? He saw these disturbances. He is Anakadundubhi. The drums announced his qualification for this at his birth. Or, in a previous birth perhaps he was a sage or yogī. Now he has been born as Vasudeva. Because he is omniscient he spoke in this manner. This is how they thought. Thus they were astonished.
