तान्प्राप्तानर्थिनो हित्वा चैद्यादीन् स्मरदुर्मदान् । दत्ता भ्रात्रा स्वपित्रा च कस्मान्नो ववृषेऽसमान् ॥ ११ ॥

tān prāptān arthino hitvā caidyādīn smara-durmadān dattā bhrātrā sva-pitrā ca kasmān no vavṛṣe ’samān

Translation

Since your brother and father offered you to them, why did you reject the King of Cedi and all those other suitors, who stood before you, maddened by Cupid? Why, instead, did you choose Us, who are not at all your equal?

Since your brother and father offered you to them, why did you reject the King of Cedi and all those other suitors, who stood before you, maddened by Cupid? Why, instead, did you choose Us, who are not at all your equal? KB 10.60.11 “… and over and above that, your father and your brother had no objection to such a marriage. On the contrary, they gave their word of honor that you would be married with Śiśupāla. Indeed, the marriage was sanctioned by both your parents. Śiśupāla was a great king and was so lusty and mad after your beauty that if he had married you I think he would always have remained with you just like your faithful servant. “In comparison to Śiśupāla, with his personal qualities, I am nothing. And you may personally realize it. I am surprised that you rejected the marriage with Śiśupāla and accepted Me, who am inferior in comparison to Śiśupāla. I think Myself completely unfit to be your husband because you are so beautiful, sober, grave and exalted. May I inquire from you the reason that induced you to accept Me? Now, of course, I may address you as My beautiful wife, but still I may inform you of My actual position—that I am inferior to all those princes who wanted to marry you.

Why did you reject those who personally came (prāptān) and requested you (arthinaḥ) and who were moreover completely maddened by love? The word ca indicates this was most ridiculous. You were even given by your brother and father to Śiśupāla, though he is an object of laughter. The word sva indicates that the daughter was dependent on her father. Therefore you should not have rejected the kings. Why did you choose me, who cannot compare with them? The plural naḥ is used to indicate the singular. (Pāṇini 1.2.51) Or why did you choose persons like us, the Yādavas, as a husband. Perfect tense is used to indicate a completed action. If you had not yet chosen, I would have stopped you from this choice.
