श्रीभगवानुवाच साध्व्येतच्छ्रोतुकामैस्त्वं राजपुत्री प्रलम्भिता । मयोदितं यदन्वात्थ सर्वं तत् सत्यमेव हि ॥ ४९ ॥

Verse text

śrī-bhagavān uvāca sādhvy etac-chrotu-kāmais tvaṁ rāja-putrī pralambhitā mayoditaṁ yad anvāttha sarvaṁ tat satyam eva hi

Synonyms

śrī — bhagavān uvāca — the Supreme Lord said ; sādhvi — O saintly lady ; etat — this ; śrotu — to hear ; kāmaiḥ — (by Us) who wanted ; tvam — you ; rāja — putri — O princess ; pralambhitā — fooled ; mayā — by Me ; uditam — spoken ; yat — what ; anvāttha — you replied to ; sarvam — all ; fat — that ; satyam — correct ; eva hi — indeed .

Translation

The Supreme Lord said: O saintly lady, O princess, We deceived you only because We wanted to hear you speak like this. Indeed, everything you said in reply to My words is most certainly true.

The Supreme Lord said: O saintly lady, O princess, We deceived you only because We wanted to hear you speak like this. Indeed, everything you said in reply to My words is most certainly true. KB 10.60.49 After hearing Rukmiṇī’s statement and her clarification of each and every word He had used to arouse her anger of love toward Him, Kṛṣṇa addressed Rukmiṇī as follows: “My dear chaste wife, My dear princess, I expected such an explanation from you, and only for this purpose did I speak all those joking words, so that you might be cheated of the real point of view. Now My purpose has been served. The wonderful explanation you have given of My every word is completely factual and approved by Me.

"We joked with you, wanting to hear your words." This is in the plural (strotu kamaih) to indicate that not only Krsna, but some of her attendants wanted to hear. The plural can also indicate that all the functions of the sense of hearing had a desire to hear. "Having been the object of my joke, you interpreted whatever I said in another way (anu attha), which was true."

Kṛṣṇa praises her for her qualities. O chaste woman! He praises her for her wealth and birth. O princess! Also I have said this on considering that you should give good answers. That was to be expected since you are a princess. I joked with you because I wanted to hear your answers. He speaks in the plural because friends were with him, who had come on thinking he needed assistance. You have explained my words in a most favorable way (anvāttha). What you said is certainly true. There is no doubt.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

O excellent woman (sādhvi)! The answers you give should be excellent. That is suitable since you are a princess. Therefore, I (asmābhiḥ) desired to hear these worlds. He speaks in the plural to indicate respect for himself as he respectfully desires to hear. Hi indicates certainty. There is no doubt that what you have said is true.
