pradyumno yuyudhānaś ca gadaḥ sāmbo ’tha sāraṇaḥ nandopananda-bhadrādyā rāma-kṛṣṇānuvartinaḥ akṣauhiṇībhir dvādaśabhiḥ sametāḥ sarvato diśam rurudhur bāṇa-nagaraṁ samantāt sātvatarṣabhāḥ

Translation

With Lord Balarāma and Lord Kṛṣṇa in the lead, the chiefs of the Sātvata clan — Pradyumna, Sātyaki, Gada, Sāmba, Sāraṇa, Nanda, Upananda, Bhadra and others — converged with an army of twelve divisions and laid siege to Bāṇasura’s capital, completely surrounding the city on all sides.

With Lord Balarāma and Lord Kṛṣṇa in the lead, the chiefs of the Sātvata clan—Pradyumna, Sātyaki, Gada, Sāmba, Sāraṇa, Nanda, Upananda, Bhadra and others—converged with an army of twelve divisions and laid siege to Bāṇasura's capital, completely surrounding the city on all sides. KB 10.63.3-4 Practically all the leaders of the family, including Pradyumna, Sātyaki, Gada, Sāmba, Sāraṇa, Nanda, Upananda and Bhadra, combined together and gathered twelve akṣauhiṇī military divisions into phalanxes. Then they all went to Śoṇitapura and surrounded it with soldiers, elephants, horses and chariots.

The word atha indicates that they all followed after Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. Nanda, Upananda and Bhadra were members of the Yadu dynasty. They brought their troops together out of affection (sam--etāḥ) and surrounded the city completely (samantāt).

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Atha means even Śāraṇa, who was well known for bravery. Or this means “after Sāmba” showing the order of the warriors following after Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. Nanda, Upananda and Bhadra were members of the Yadu dynasty. Other warriors like Kṛtavarmā are included. Or Nanda, Upananda, and Bhadrasena, and others such as Śrīdāmā (ādyāḥ), refer to the leaders of the cowherd troops who lived in Dvārakā out of affection for Kṛṣṇa, or who went to battle with the Yadus often. Or they came from Vraja at this time quickly out of affection, worried about a battle with Śiva. The word atha can mean this. They followed in front of Pradyumna and the rest. Balarāma is mentioned before Kṛṣṇa because he was the elder brother. Or out of affection he went in front during battle. Balarāma (rāma) gave pleasure to all and Kṛṣṇa attracted everyone because of his affection. The troops gathered with affection (sametāḥ) and continually attacked the fortress because they were the best of the Yadus. Or because of the presence of the cowherds they were the best according to the example of the umbrella carriers go (said if one person, the king, has an umbrella, everyone is said to have an umbrella). Or the cowherds were also Yadus according to Skanda Purānā. Or the Yadus were the best of devotees (sātvata).
