राजन्यबन्धवो ह्येते ब्रह्मलिङ्गानि बिभ्रति । ददानि भिक्षितं तेभ्य आत्मानमपि दुस्त्यजम् ॥ २३ ॥

rājanya-bandhavo hy ete brahma-liṅgāni bibhrati dadāni bhikṣitaṁ tebhya ātmānam api dustyajam

Synonyms

rājanya — bandhavaḥ — relatives of kṣatriyas ; hi — indeed ; ete — these ; brahma — of brāhmaṇas ; liṅgāni — the signs ; bibhrati — they are wearing ; dadāni — I should give ; bhikṣitam — what is begged ; tebhyaḥ — to them ; ātmānam — my own body ; api — even ; dustyajam — impossible to give up .

Translation

[Jarāsandha thought:] These are surely members of the royal order dressed as brāhmaṇas, but still I must grant their request for charity, even if they beg me for my own body.

[Jarāsandha thought:] These are surely members of the royal order dressed as brāhmaṇas, but still I must grant their request for charity, even if they beg me for my own body. KB 10.72.23 But although these three persons were kṣatriyas, they had come to his door begging alms like brāhmaṇas. Therefore he decided that he would fulfill their desires in spite of their being kṣatriyas, because they had already diminished their position by appearing before him as beggars. “Under the circumstances,” he thought, “I am prepared to give them anything. Even if they ask for my body, I shall not hesitate to offer it to them.”

He thought as follows. Another version has rājanya-bandhavo ‘pi and dadāmi instead of dadāni. Even I should give them my body if they ask.
