वयं पुरा श्रीमदनष्टद‍ृष्टयो जिगीषयास्या इतरेतरस्पृध: । घ्नन्त: प्रजा: स्वा अतिनिर्घृणा: प्रभो मृत्युं पुरस्त्वाविगणय्य दुर्मदा: ॥ १२ ॥ त एव कृष्णाद्य गभीररंहसा दुरन्तेवीर्येण विचालिता: श्रिय: । कालेन तन्वा भवतोऽनुकम्पया विनष्टदर्पाश्चरणौ स्मराम ते ॥ १३ ॥

vayaṁ purā śrī-mada-naṣṭa-dṛṣṭayo jigīṣayāsyā itaretara-spṛdhaḥ ghnantaḥ prajāḥ svā ati-nirghṛṇāḥ prabho mṛtyuṁ puras tvāvigaṇayya durmadāḥ ta eva kṛṣṇādya gabhīra-raṁhasā durante-vīryeṇa vicālitāḥ śriyaḥ kālena tanvā bhavato ’nukampayā vinaṣṭa-darpāś caraṇau smarāma te

Translation

Previously, blinded by the intoxication of riches, we wanted to conquer this earth, and thus we fought one another to achieve victory, mercilessly harassing our own subjects. We arrogantly disregarded You, O Lord, who stood before us as death. But now, O Kṛṣṇa, that powerful form of Yours called time, moving mysteriously and irresistibly, has deprived us of our opulences. Now that You have mercifully destroyed our pride, we beg simply to remember Your lotus feet.

Previously, blinded by the intoxication of riches, we wanted to conquer this earth, and thus we fought one another to achieve victory, mercilessly harassing our own subjects. We arrogantly disregarded You, O Lord, who stood before us as death. But now, O Kṛṣṇa, that powerful form of Yours called time, moving mysteriously and irresistibly, has deprived us of our opulences. Now that You have mercifully destroyed our pride, we beg simply to remember Your lotus feet. KB 10.73.12-13 O Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, we must admit that before this we were puffed up with our material opulences. It was as if we were intoxicated. Because we were all envious and wanted to conquer one another, we all engaged in fighting for supremacy, even at the cost of sacrificing the lives of many citizens.” This is the disease of political power. As soon as a king becomes rich in material opulences, he wants to dominate other nations by military aggression. Similarly, mercantile men want to monopolize a certain type of business and control other mercantile groups. Impelled by false prestige and infatuated by material opulences, human society, instead of striving for Kṛṣṇa consciousness, creates havoc and disrupts peaceful living. Thus men forget the real purpose of life: to attain the favor of Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The kings continued: “O Lord, we were simply engaged in the abominable task of killing citizens and alluring them to be unnecessarily killed, just to satisfy our political whims. We did not consider that Your Lordship is always present before us in the form of cruel death. We were so foolish that we became the cause of death for others, forgetting our own impending death. But, dear Lord, the force of the time element, which is Your representative, is certainly insurmountable. The time element is so strong that no one can escape its influence; therefore we have received the reactions of our atrocious activities, and we are now bereft of all opulences and stand before You like street beggars. We consider our position Your causeless, unalloyed mercy upon us because now we can understand that we were falsely proud and that our material opulences could be withdrawn from us within a second by Your will. By Your causeless mercy only, we are now able to think of Your lotus feet. This is our greatest gain.

Examples of this are ourselves. Wanting to conquer the earth (asyah) we competed with each other, not seeing you as death situated in front of us. Previously we were intoxicated with pride, and now, today, we have lost our power by the influence yourself as time. Receiving your mercy, may we remember your lotus feet. We realize that the cause of losing our kingdoms was your mercy.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Losing our kingdoms has been the cause of obtaining your mercy. Though the citizens should be protected like relatives (sva) we afflicted them by our fighting with each other since we were most cruel (ati-nirghṛṇāḥ). Though death was present before us, and we would necessarily die, since we could experience it by seeing fathers die, death was in front of us. You were the destroyer, death, in the form of time. Time is most powerful since it is your form (prabho)! No one can protect himself from your form of time. We did not respect you (avigaṇayya). Śrīdhara Svāmī explains how the kings are burdened with a kingdom and without the kingdom they are no longer burdened in two verses. No one has the power to overcome time. Time acts quickly without being noticed. Because of its subtlety, death approaches unnoticed. Its power cannot be counteracted (duranta-vīryena) since it is your body. What time does is done by you. Agitated by this time, we have lost all pride because of your mercy. Thus we remember you, since you attract all the senses of the ātmārāmas (kṛṣṇa)! That has been testified by the great souls (SB 1.7.10). Why is it necessary for us to speak about this?
