य एतस्मिन् महाभागा: प्रीतिं कुर्वन्ति मानवा: । नारयोऽभिभवन्त्येतान् विष्णुपक्षानिवासुरा: ॥ १८ ॥

ya etasmin mahā-bhāgāḥ prītiṁ kurvanti mānavāḥ nārayo ’bhibhavanty etān viṣṇu-pakṣān ivāsurāḥ

Synonyms

ye — those persons who ; etasmin — unto this child ; mahā — bhāgāḥ — very fortunate ; prītim — affection ; kurvanti — execute ; mānavāḥ — such persons ; na — not ; arayaḥ — the enemies ; abhibhavanti — do overcome ; etān — those who are attached to Kṛṣṇa ; viṣṇu — pakṣān — the demigods, who always have Lord Viṣṇu on their side ; iva — like ; asurāḥ — the demons .

Translation

Demons [asuras] cannot harm the demigods, who always have Lord Viṣṇu on their side. Similarly, any person or group attached to Kṛṣṇa is extremely fortunate. Because such persons are very much affectionate toward Kṛṣṇa, they cannot be defeated by demons like the associates of Kaṁsa [or by the internal enemies, the senses].

Demons [asuras] cannot harm the demigods, who always have Lord Viṣṇu on their side. Similarly, any person or group attached to Kṛṣṇa is extremely fortunate. Because such persons are very much affectionate toward Kṛṣṇa, they cannot be defeated by demons like the associates of Kaṁsa [or by the internal enemies, the senses]. KB 10.8.18 Your child is so powerful that anyone who will become a devotee of your boy will never be troubled by enemies. Just as demigods are always protected by Lord Viṣṇu, the devotees of your child will always be protected by Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

A version with mahā-bhage instead of mahābhāgaḥ means O most fortunate Yaśodā! He calls out to her since women usually perform dharma properly. Or it can refer to most fortunate Kṛṣṇa. Men who show affection for most fortunate Kṛṣṇa (mahā-bhāge) are not defeated by demons. Mānavāḥ means any jīva. Arayaḥ means enemies like the demons or internal enemies like lust. Enemies cannot conquer them just as demons cannot conquer the devatās. The hidden meaning is that bhāga means bhaga, the Lord inclined to manifest six amazing qualities (bhagavān). Or viṣṇu-pakṣaṇ refers to anyone like a devatā and the last line can stand as one statement. The word iva is not irrelevant. Enemies similar (iva) to demons cannot conquer the devotees who show affection for this fortunate child.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Enemies cannot harm men who show affection for the most fortunate Kṛṣṇa (mahā-bhāge). He is never lacking in supreme qualities. Actually he manifests unlimited qualities as bhagavān. Or mahā-bhāge means O Yaśodā, most fortunate woman! Garga addresses his wife, since one should perform dharma with one’s wife. The husband and wife are considered non-different. He says this to give joy to Yāśodā who was sitting there desiring to hear the qualities of her son with affection. Elsewhere Nanda is the chief person. All humans, without regard for birth, who show affection for Kṛṣṇa, are protected from enemies. Actually he appears among humans to show affection for them, but Garga hides this fact. The external enemies are Kaṁsa and others. The internal enemies are lust etc. Similarly the demons cannot harm the devatās or the materialists cannot harm the devotees. You should never fear Kaṁsa and his allies.
