सूर्यश्चास्तं गतस्तावत् तमसा चावृता दिश: । निम्नं कूलं जलमयं न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥ ३७ ॥

sūryaś cāstaṁ gatas tāvat tamasā cāvṛtā diśaḥ nimnaṁ kūlaṁ jala-mayaṁ na prājṣāyata kiṣcana

Synonyms

sūryaḥ the sun ; ca and ; astam gataḥ having set ; tāvat thereupon ; tamasā by darkness ; ca and ; āvṛtāḥ covered ; diśaḥ all the directions ; nimnam low ; kūlam high land ; jala mayam — with water all around ; na prājṣāyata could not be recognized ; kiṣcana any .

Translation

Then, as the sun set, the forest was covered by darkness in every direction, and with all the flooding we could not distinguish high land from low.

Then, as the sun set, the forest was covered by darkness in every direction, and with all the flooding we could not distinguish high land from low. KB 10.80.37 “Then sunset came, and we were lost in the dark jungle. After this, there was severe rainfall; the whole ground was overflooded with water, and we could not trace out the way to return to our guru’s āśrama.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

The word ca is repeated to show that the sun set and darkness appeared simultaneously. We could clearly not distinguish low from high land since the place became flooded with water.
