Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Thus Lord Kṛṣṇa, the spiritual master of the gopīs and the very purpose of their life, showed them His mercy. He then met with Yudhiṣṭhira and all His other relatives and inquired from them about their welfare.

There were many visitors who came to see Kṛṣṇa, and among them were the Pāṇḍavas, headed by King Yudhiṣṭhira. After talking with the gopīs and bestowing upon them the greatest benediction, Lord Kṛṣṇa welcomed King Yudhiṣṭhira and other relatives who had come to see Him. He first of all inquired from them whether their situation was auspicious.

The words
gurur gatiḥ
have been translated here in their usual sense: “spiritual master and goal.” Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī, however, points out an additional meaning: While Lord Kṛṣṇa is the goal for all
sādhus
in general, for the
gopīs
specifically He is that goal which is
guru,
“predominant,” in the sense of completely eclipsing the significance of all other possible goals.

In the eighty third chapter Krsna is praised by his friends. On inquiry from Draupadi the queens of Krsna describe how he married them.
Just as Krsna satisfied the gopis, so (tatha) Krsna, he was merciful to the others . He inquired from Yudhisthira and all his other friends concerning their welfare or auspciousness. He is the goal of all devotees, but he is the greatest object of love for the gopis (guru gatih).

Having summarized the conversation of the gopīs with Kṛṣṇa on their first day of meeting, other dealings on other days are understood. He made them understand that just as he was the guru he was their attainment. This was the essence of his instructions. Secondarily his conversations with Yudhiṣṭhira and others are praised. He gave the gopīs mercy according to their prayer (tathā) because he alone was their instructor and the goal whom they eternally possessed (gatiḥ). After that (atha) he inquired from Yudhiṣṭhira since their fate until that time had been unclear. It is understood that previous to this he had not asked them, what to speak of other persons.
This description is given to show that Kṛṣṇa valued the gopīs most of all. He inquired about Yudhiṣṭhira’s health free of injury (avyayam).

By speaking or in that way (tathā), the Lord showed mercy to the gopīs because he was their instructor (guru) and their goal, the means and object of attainment. After that (atha), since he should give the gopīs mercy first since they were the best, with special prema, he met with Yudhiṣṭhira. He is mentioned first since he was dearest, as the king, and the best among friends.
