अस्मास्वप्रतिकल्पेयं यत् कृताज्ञेषु सत्तमै: । मैत्र्यर्पिताफला चापि न निवर्तेत कर्हिचित् ॥ ६२ ॥

asmāsv apratikalpeyaṁ yat kṛtājṣeṣu sattamaiḥ maitry arpitāphalā cāpi na nivarteta karhicit

Synonyms

asmāsu to us ; apratikalpā incomparable ; iyam this ; yat since ; kṛta ajṣeṣu — who are oblivious of the mercy that has been shown them ; sat tamaiḥ — by those who are most saintly ; maitrī friendship ; arpitā offered ; aphalā unreciprocated ; ca api even though ; na nivarteta it does not cease ; karhicit ever .

Translation

Indeed, the Supreme Lord must have created the bonds of affection, for such exalted saints as you have never stopped showing matchless friendship toward us ingrates, although it has never been properly reciprocated.

Indeed, the Supreme Lord must have created the bonds of affection, for such exalted saints as you have never stopped showing matchless friendship toward us ingrates, although it has never been properly reciprocated. KB 10.84.62 “My dear brother, you have exhibited feelings of love for me that I was not able to return. I think, therefore, that I am ungrateful. You have behaved exactly as is characteristic of saintly persons, but I shall never be able to repay you. I have no means to repay you for your friendly dealings. Nevertheless I am confident that our tie of love will never break. Our friendship must ever continue, in spite of my inability to repay you. I hope you will excuse me for this inability.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

That friendship which is incomparable, and irrepayable, bestowed by saintly persons in the form of yourselves upon us by bestowing the great treasure of firm affection upon Krsna and Balrama, will certainly (ca api) never cease. Who are we? We are ungrateful (krta ajnesu), not acknowledging the help you rendered to us. Therefore we are not saintly. Therefore we are not ashamed to even speak this to you who are so saintly.

The Lord has created this bondage. Why? Vasudeva explains this by giving an example. You have never stopped showing us, and others related to us, causeless friendship, though we live far away and have committed offense to you. Or, the Lord has made mutual affection. Like tying two cows together, you are bound to me by that affection, though I do not maintain the relationship. That is most astonishing, because I see lack of mutual relationship in that association. Then he speaks this verse. To us who cannot show friendship with affection, you who are correct in conduct do not stop at any time the incomparable (aprati-kalpā) friendship offered with affection, without expectation, just for friendship, even though you could stop it.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

“Why do you think that the unmotivated affection of great souls like you for us low, ungrateful persons is negated?” You show matchless affection to us. It is in the plural to indicate Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. Or he gives regard to himself in the plural, as the object of Nanda’s great affection. He addresses Nanda as the greatest (sattamaiḥ) to indicate his own low position out of politeness and humility. That affection has never stopped at any time (karhicit), though we are situated far away and commit offense.
