saṅkarṣaṇa sanātana
jāne vām asya yat sākṣāt
pradhāna-puruṣau parau

Translation
[Vasudeva said:] O Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, best of yogīs, O eternal Saṅkarṣaṇa! I know that You two are personally the source of universal creation and the ingredients of creation as well.

[Vasudeva said:] O Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, best of yogīs, O eternal Saṅkarṣaṇa! I know that You two are personally the source of universal creation and the ingredients of creation as well.

“My dear Kṛṣṇa, You are the sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1] Supreme Personality of Godhead. And my dear Balarāma, You are Saṅkarṣaṇa, the master of all mystic powers; therefore I have now understood that You are eternal. Both of You are transcendental to this material manifestation and to its cause, the Supreme Person, Mahā-Viṣṇu.
Purport
As taught in the Sāṅkhya doctrine of Lord Kapiladeva,
pradhāna
is the creative energy of the
puruṣa,
the Supreme Person. Thus, of these two principles, the
pradhāna
is the predominated energy, female, incapable of independent action, while the
puruṣa
is the absolutely independent, primeval creator and enjoyer. Neither Kṛṣṇa nor His brother Balarāma belong to the category of subordinate energy; rather, both of Them together are the original
puruṣa,
who is always joined by His manifold potencies of pleasure, knowledge and creative emanation.
Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
I know you two (vam) who (yat) are superior (parau) to the pradhana and purusa who are the causes of this universe (asya). Or I know you who are two chief purusas of the universe, Vasudeva and Sankarsana, producing the pradhana.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
O Svayam Bhagavān (kṛṣṇa)! He repeats that name for emphasis. O pervade of everything (mahā-yogin), eternal shelter of the influence of yogamāyā! O Saṅkarṣaṇa, second expansion in Kṛṣṇa’s vyūha, and thus attracted by Kṛṣṇa, and was made his assistant even in his prakaṭa pastimes. O eternal accomplished one (sanātana)! I am convinced that you two are situated beyond the pradhāna and puruṣa of the universe. You are beyond the upādhis of prakṛti and beyond the puruṣa who glances at prakṛti, and who is your aṁśa.
bhagavān eka āsedam agra ātmātmanāṁ vibhuḥ
ātmecchānugatāv ātmā nānā-maty-upalakṣaṇaḥ
Bhagavān, who exists in the form of Paramātmā and Brahman according to the viewpoint, alone existed before the creation of the universe, when the desire to create bodies of the jīvas was absent. SB 3.5.23
kāla-vṛttyā tu māyāyāṁ guṇa-mayyām adhokṣajaḥ
puruṣeṇātma-bhūtena vīryam ādhatta vīryavān
Bhagavān, lord of Mahā-vaikuṇṭha, in his svāṁśa expansion as the puruṣa, full of potency, at a certain moment of time, placed the jīvas into māyā which became agitated by the guṇas. SB 3.5.26
Because you are the root form as Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, you are both Svayam Bhagavān (parau). You two are both directly the Supreme Lords.
Purport (Sanatana Goswami)
Seeing directly the great affection of Nanda and Yaśodā for his sons, and their affection for Nanda and Yaśodā, praying in a similar fashion, he first gives up ātma-jñāna and praises them. O supreme Brahman ,who attracts all hearts by manifesting unlimited powers (kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa)! O Lord endowed with great powers (mahāyogin)! Or O svayam bhagavān! His tongue was eager to say the name, so it is repeated. O Lord with inconceivable power (mahāyogin)! O Saṅkarṣaṇa! Because of affection, Balarāma is considered non-different from Kṛṣṇa. O Balarāma eternally situated as the second member of the catur-vyūha (sanātana)! Or O Lord who negates the fear that there will be separation from him (sanātana). Or Lord who gives joy to the people of Vraja by activities like pulling the Yamunā (sanātana)! Balarāma is addressed separately to indicate his lesser position.
Or all names can be considered meant for both. But Kṛṣṇa is addressed first, since as svayam bhagavān, he is the greatest. I know now and I have always known that you two are pradhāna and the puruṣa. They are actually their aṁśas. You are supreme. Though theLord is only one entity, he is two as Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, but they are still one (parau). Or you two are the supreme Lords (pradhāna-puruṣau), most excellent in manifesting unlimited powers (parau).
