श्रीशुक उवाच कृष्णस्यासीद् द्विजश्रेष्ठ: श्रुतदेव इति श्रुत: । कृष्णैकभक्त्या पूर्णार्थ: शान्त: कविरलम्पट: ॥ १३ ॥

śrī-śuka uvāca kṛṣṇasyāsīd dvija-śreṣṭhaḥ śrutadeva iti śrutaḥ kṛṣṇaika-bhaktyā pūrṇārthaḥ śāntaḥ kavir alampataḥ

Synonyms

śrī — śukaḥ uvāca — Śrī Śukadeva said ; kṛṣṇasya — of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; āsīt — there was ; dvija — of brāhmaṇas ; śreṣṭhaḥ — one of the best ; śrutadevaḥ — Śrutadeva ; iti — thus ; śrutaḥ — known ; kṛṣṇa — to Lord Kṛṣṇa ; eka — exclusive ; bhaktyā — by his devotion ; pūrṇa — full ; arthaḥ — in all goals of desire ; śāntaḥ — peaceful ; kaviḥ — learned and discriminating ; alampaṭaḥ — not desirous of sense gratification .

Translation

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: There was a devotee of Kṛṣṇa’s known as Śrutadeva, who was a first-class brāhmaṇa. Perfectly satisfied by rendering unalloyed devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, he was peaceful, learned and free from sense gratification.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: There was a devotee of Kṛṣṇa's known as Śrutadeva, who was a first-class brāhmaṇa. Perfectly satisfied by rendering unalloyed devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, he was peaceful, learned and free from sense gratification. KB 10.86.13-14 Mahārāja Parīkṣit was very eager to hear more about Kṛṣṇa, and so, after finishing the narration of Arjuna’s kidnapping Subhadrā, Śukadeva Gosvāmī began to narrate another story, as follows. There was a householder brāhmaṇa in the city of Mithilā, the capital of the kingdom of Videha. This brāhmaṇa, whose name was Śrutadeva, was a great devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Because he was fully Kṛṣṇa conscious and always engaged in the service of the Lord, he was completely peaceful in mind and detached from all material attraction. He was very learned and had no desire other than to be fully situated in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Although in the order of householder life, he never took great pains to earn anything for his livelihood; he was satisfied with whatever he could achieve without much endeavor, and somehow or other he lived in that way.

Here, Sukadeva tells a special story that he spontaneously recollected, without being asked, which he personally witnessed. The brahmana was a devotee of Krsna, who took Krsna as his master (krsnasya).

Though not requested, Śukadeva now recites a pastime that he heard about, attractive because it shows Kṛṣṇa’s direct mercy to his devotee in meeting that devotee. A new topic is introduced with the words “Śukadeva said.” Śrutadeva was the best of brāhmaṇas, fully dedicated to Kṛṣṇa. He was fully endowed with artha, dharma, and kāma because of his pure bhakti (eka-bhaktyā) to Kṛṣṇa alone, even though he did not desire these things. His heart was fixed on Kṛṣṇa (śāntaḥ) because he had all knowledge (kaviḥ). He was not attracted to material enjoyment.
