इत्याद्यमृषिमानम्य तच्छिष्यांश्च महात्मन: । ततोऽगादाश्रमं साक्षात् पितुर्द्वैपायनस्य मे ॥ ४७ ॥

ity ādyam ṛṣim ānamya tac-chiṣyāṁś ca mahātmanaḥ tato ’gād āśramaṁ sākṣāt pitur dvaipāyanasya me

Synonyms

iti thus speaking ; ādyam foremost ; ṛṣim to the sage (Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi) ; ānamya bowing down ; tat His ; śiṣyān to the disciples ; ca and ; mahā ātmanaḥ — great saints ; tataḥ from there (Nārāyaṇāśrama) ; agāt he went ; āśramam to the hermitage ; sākṣāt direct ; pituḥ of the progenitor ; dvaipāyanasya Dvaipāyana Vedavyāsa ; me my .

Translation

[Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] After saying this, Nārada bowed down to Śrī Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi, the foremost of sages, and also to His saintly disciples. He then returned to the hermitage of my father, Dvaipāyana Vyāsa.

[Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] After saying this, Nārada bowed down to Śrī Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi, the foremost of sages, and also to His saintly disciples. He then returned to the hermitage of my father, Dvaipāyana Vyāsa. KB 10.87.47 Nārada Muni, after offering respects to Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi, went to the āśrama of Vyāsadeva, his disciple.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

"Iti" can mean either method or completion. Thus ther e are two meanings of the verse. Paying respects to Narayan rsi in this manner (iti), by reciting prayers to Krsna, he left the asrama and went to vyasadeva’s asrama. Or the meaning can be: After having completed his prayers to Krsna (iti), then paying his respects to Narayana rsi, he then left the asrama and went to the asrama of Vyasadeva.

He went without delay to the āśrama of Vedavyāsa, where Śukadeva did not reside. In Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa it is explained that Śukadeva was in the womb of Vyāsa’s wife, bu remained there for many years by his power of yoga. His father begged him, and asked why he did not come out of the womb. “Why should I come out? Immediately on coming out I will be covered by the Lord’s māyā.” Hearing this, Vyāsa went to Dvārakā on his instructions, and brought Kṛṣṇa, Svayam Bhagavān. The Lord said, “You mother is suffering. Why do you not come out?” Hearing this, and requested by the Lord, he said, “If you remove māyā, then I will come out.” This was accepted by the Lord, and Śukadeva came out. He then left Vyāsa’s āśrama and wandered about.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Offering respects and asking permission to leave, he departed. Another version has āmantrya with the same meaning. He offered respects to the main inhabitants of Kalāpagrāma (śiṣyān), though he was Brahmā’s son. That was because they were also great devotees (mahātmanaḥ). Then (tataḥ) he departed. This indicates his great courtesy. Or he departed from Nārāyaṇa’s hermitage (tataḥ). He went to the famous (sākṣāt) hermitage called Badarī. Because of this place Vyāsa is called Bādarāyaṇa.
