Translation (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

King Parīkṣit said: Those demigods, demons and humans who worship Lord Śiva, a strict renunciant, usually enjoy wealth and sense gratification, while the worshipers of the Supreme Lord Hari, the husband of the goddess of fortune, do not. KB 10.88.1 As a great devotee of Kṛṣṇa, King Parīkṣit was already liberated, but for clarification he was asking various questions of Śukadeva Gosvāmī. In the previous chapter, King Parīkṣit’s question was, “What is the ultimate goal of the Vedas?” And Śukadeva Gosvāmī explained the matter, giving authoritative descriptions from the disciplic succession, from Sanandana down to Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi, Nārada, Vyāsadeva and then Śukadeva himself. The conclusion was that devotional service, or bhakti, is the ultimate goal of the Vedas. A neophyte devotee may question, “If the ultimate goal of life, or the conclusion of the Vedas, is to elevate oneself to the platform of devotional service, then why is it observed that a devotee of Lord Viṣṇu is generally not very prosperous materially, whereas a devotee of Lord Śiva is found to be very opulent?” In order to clarify this matter, Parīkṣit Mahārāja asked Śukadeva Gosvāmī, “My dear Śukadeva Gosvāmī, it is generally found that those who engage in the worship of Lord Śiva, whether in human, demoniac or demigod society, become materially very opulent, although Lord Śiva himself lives just like a poverty-stricken person. On the other hand, the devotees of Lord Viṣṇu, who is the controller of the goddess of fortune, do not appear very prosperous, and sometimes they are even found living without any material opulence at all. Lord Śiva lives underneath a tree or in the snow of the Himalaya Mountains. He does not even construct a house for himself, but still the worshipers of Lord Śiva are very rich. Kṛṣṇa, or Lord Viṣṇu, however, lives very opulently, whether in Vaikuṇṭha or in the material world, but His devotees appear poverty-stricken.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

The eighty eighth chapter explains that Visnu is worthy of service and is beyond the material modes, whereas Siva is touched by the modes. Siva was put into danger by his own devotee Vrkasura. Visnu and his devotee, both beyond the modes, are always exchanging bliss, whereas Siva and his devotee, caught up in the modes, experience suffering. The personified Vedas already stated that among the forms of brahman, paramatma and bhagavan, bhagavan and his devotee are the best. Now in a chapter and a half, amongst Brahma, Visnu and Siva, Visnu is pointed out as the most worthy of service. You have established the worship of Visnu with such statements at the end of the last chapter as "one should meditate on Hari (dhyayet ajasram harim)." Sb 10.87.50 Why then do all people, fearing poverty in worshipping Visnu, take to the worship of Siva?_ Siva is called inauspicious (asiva) because from materialistic vision he wears inauspicious items like ashes from the burning ghata and skulls. But the worshippers of Siva enjoy with wealth, whereas the worshippers of Visnu, the husband of Laksmi, have no wealth, and do not enjoy.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Seeing some devotees of Śiva unsatisfied on hearing the profuse excellence of Kṛṣṇa, Parīkṣit asks a question to confirm that excellence, in order to enlighten them. Those who worship Śiva, enjoy and have wealth. Those who worship Hari have no wealth, and previous wealth is taken away, generally. But sometimes devotees of Śiva attain the supreme abode and devotees of the Lord attain wealth.
