उत्तार्य गोपी सुश‍ृतं पय: पुन: प्रविश्य संद‍ृश्य च दध्यमत्रकम् । भग्नं विलोक्य स्वसुतस्य कर्म त- ज्जहास तं चापि न तत्र पश्यती ॥ ७ ॥

uttārya gopī suśṛtaṁ payaḥ punaḥ praviśya saṁdṛśya ca dadhy-amatrakam bhagnaṁ vilokya sva-sutasya karma taj jahāsa taṁ cāpi na tatra paśyatī

Synonyms

uttārya — putting down from the oven ; gopī — mother Yaśodā ; su — śṛtam — very hot ; payaḥ — the milk ; punaḥ — again ; praviśya — entered the churning spot ; saṁdṛśya — by observing ; ca — also ; dadhi — amatrakam — the container of yogurt ; bhagnam — broken ; vilokya — seeing this ; sva — sutasya — of her own child ; karma — work ; tat — that ; jahāsa — smiled ; tam ca — Kṛṣṇa also ; api — at the same time ; na — not ; tatra — there ; paśyatī — finding .

Translation

Mother Yaśodā, after taking down the hot milk from the oven, returned to the churning spot, and when she saw that the container of yogurt was broken and that Kṛṣṇa was not present, she concluded that the breaking of the pot was the work of Kṛṣṇa.

Mother Yaśodā, after taking down the hot milk from the oven, returned to the churning spot, and when she saw that the container of yogurt was broken and that Kṛṣṇa was not present, she concluded that the breaking of the pot was the work of Kṛṣṇa. KB 10.9.7 In the meantime, Mother Yaśodā returned to the churning place after setting the overflowing milk pan in order. She saw the broken pot, in which the churning yogurt had been kept. Since she could not find her boy, she concluded that the broken pot was His work. She smiled as she thought, “The child is very clever. After breaking the pot He has left this place, fearing punishment.”

Seeing the pot broken and Kṛṣṇa not present, Yaśodā definitely concluded that the breaking of the pot was the work of Kṛṣṇa. There was no doubt about it.

Taking the cooked milk (suska payah) from the stove, she entered the room where she was churning the yogurt, and saw the strong shiny pot broken (dadhy amakrakam) . The suffix ka is added to amakram out of sympathy for its sorry state. Understanding that this was the work of her son, she put her forefinger to her nose and began laughing.

Suśrtam means well cooked. She saw the broken pot and understood that he had done it since no one else would do that, since the hole was made skillfully and since it was possible that he was angry. But not seeing him there, she laughed because of his fickle nature, his skill in breaking the pot, his running away in fear, and because of the sound of moving pots and his ankle bells in the next room.

She immediately took the milk from the fire. She saw that the yogurt was flowing from the pot and understood that Kṛṣṇa had done this. No one else would desire to do this or was capable of doing this. Not seeing him there she laughed, because it displayed his fickle nature, his skill in breaking it or because he had fled in fear. She quietly pursued him (ca) on her tip toes.
