तयो: समभवल्लोभो निकृतिश्च महामते । ताभ्यां क्रोधश्च हिंसा च यद्दुरुक्ति: स्वसा कलि: ॥ ३ ॥

Verse text

tayoḥ samabhaval lobho nikṛtiś ca mahā-mate tābhyāṁ krodhaś ca hiṁsā ca yad duruktiḥ svasā kaliḥ

Synonyms

tayoḥ — those two ; samabhavat — were born ; lobhaḥ — Greed ; nikṛtiḥ — Cunning ; ca — and ; mahā — mate — O great soul ; tābhyām — from both of them ; krodhaḥ — Anger ; ca — and ; hiṁsā — Envy ; ca — and ; yat — from both of whom ; duruktiḥ — Harsh Speech ; svasā — sister ; kaliḥ — Kali .

Translation

Maitreya told Vidura: O great soul, from Dambha and Māyā were born Greed and Nikṛti, or Cunning. From their combination came children named Krodha [Anger] and Hiṁsā [Envy], and from their combination were born Kali and his sister Durukti (Harsh Speech).

Translation (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

O great soul! From Cheating and Illusion were born Greed and Deceit. From their combination came children named Anger and Violence, and from their combination were born Quarrel and his sister Profanity. Nikṛtiḥ means deceit. From Anger and Violence came Quarrel and Profantiy.
