सम: स्यात्सुखदु:खाभ्यां मृत्युजीवितयोस्तथा ॥ १४ ॥

tasmād akīrti-yaśasor
jayāpajayayor api
samaḥ syāt sukha-duḥkhābhyāṁ
mṛtyu-jīvitayos tathā

Translation
Since everything is dependent on the supreme will of the Personality of Godhead, one should be equipoised in fame and defamation, victory and defeat, life and death. In their effects, represented as happiness and distress, one should maintain oneself in equilibrium, without anxiety.

Therefore, one should think equally of infamy and fame, victory and defeat, happiness and distress, death and life.
Samaḥ means “thinking of them as equal.” Sukha-duḥkhabhyām should be sukha-duḥkhayoḥ.
