तं तथावनतं भक्तं प्रजाकामं प्रजापतिम् । चित्तज्ञ: सर्वभूतानामिदमाह जनार्दन: ॥ ४२ ॥

Verse text

taṁ tathāvanataṁ bhaktaṁ prajā-kāmaṁ prajāpatim citta-jṣaḥ sarva-bhūtānām idam āha janārdanaḥ

Synonyms

tam him (Prajāpati Dakṣa) ; tathā in that way ; avanatam prostrated before Him ; bhaktam a great devotee ; prajā kāmam — desiring to increase the population ; prajāpatim unto the prajāpati (Dakṣa) ; citta jṣaḥ — who can understand the hearts ; sarva bhūtānām — of all living entities ; idam this ; āha said ; janārdanaḥ the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who can appease everyone’s desires .

Translation

Although Prajāpati Dakṣa could not say anything, when the Lord, who knows everyone’s heart, saw His devotee prostrate in that manner and desiring to increase the population, He addressed him as follows.

The Lord who knows the heart of all beings then spoke to his devotee Dakṣa, who was bowing before him with a desire to produce progeny.
