यत्तु कामेप्सुना कर्म साहङ्कारेण वा पुन: । क्रियते बहुलायासं तद्राजसमुदाहृतम् ॥ २४ ॥

Verse text

yat tu kāmepsunā karma sāhaṅkāreṇa vā punaḥ kriyate bahulāyāsaṁ tad rājasam udāhṛtam

Synonyms

yat that which ; tu but ; kāma-īpsunā by one with desires for fruitive results ; karma work ; sa-ahaṅkāreṇa with ego ; or ; punaḥ again ; kriyate is performed ; bahula-āyāsam with great labor ; tat that ; rājasam in the mode of passion ; udāhṛtam is said to be.

Translation

But action performed with great effort by one seeking to gratify his desires, and enacted from a sense of false ego, is called action in the mode of passion.

24. That work is performed with desire for results, with little or great pride, with plenty of suffering, is called rajasic work.

24. That work which is performed with desire for results, with the conception of being the agent, with plenty of trouble, is called rajasic work.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

That work which is performed with desire for results (kāma ipsunā), indicating a little pride, or with great pride (sāhaṅkārena) is called rajasic work.

Acton done with desire for results, with the conception of being the doer (sa ahaṅkareṇa), with plenty of trouble (bahula āyāsam), is called work in the mode of passion.
