Verse Text
nirvedo, yathā –
dhanyaḥ sāmba bhavān sa-riṅgaṇam ayan pārśve rajaḥ-karbūro
yas tātena vikṛṣya vatsalatayā svotsaṅgam āropitaḥ |
dhiṅ māṁ durbhagam atra śambara-mayair durdaiva-visphūrjitaiḥ
prāptā na kṣaṇikāpi lālana-ratiḥ sā yena bālye pituḥ ||165||
Translation
Nirveda (self-deprecation): O Sāmba! You are very fortunate, because when you crawl to Kṛṣṇa with your body covered with dust, He picks you up in great affection and puts you on His lap. I am unfortunate. Because of the unfortunate actions of the expansions of the demon Śambara, I did not receive even for a moment that loving care from my father.

Śambara-mayaiḥ means “by the portions of Śambara.” (Śambara could assume any form he wanted. Assuming such a form, he stole Pradumnya when he was ten days old and threw him in the ocean. Thus Pradumnya did not meet His father for some time after his birth.)

In addition to jubilation, there are sometimes symptoms of disappointment. Pradyumna once addressed Sāmba with these words: “My dear Sāmba, you are such a glorified personality! I have seen that once when you were playing on the ground, your body became covered with dust; yet our father, Lord Kṛṣṇa, still took you up on His lap. But I am so unfortunate that I could never get such love from our father!” This statement is an example of disappointment in love.
