Verse Text

catuṣṭaye ’pi vīrāṇāṁ nikhilā eva sāttvikāḥ | garvāvega-dhṛti-vrīḍā-mati-harṣāvahitthikāḥ | amarṣotsukatāsūyā-smṛty-ādyā vyabhicāriṇaḥ ||17||

Translation

All the four types of heroes show all the sāttvika-bhāvas and all the vyabhicāri-bhāvas such as garva, āvega, dhṛti, vrīḍā, mati, harṣa, avahitthā, amarṣa, utsukatā, asūyā and smṛti.

Purport (Nectar of Devotion)

Chivalrous activities in the matter of fighting, charity, mercy and execution of religious rituals are called constitutional, whereas expressions of pride, emotion, endurance, kindness, determination, jubilation, enthusiasm, jealousy and remembrance are called unconstitutional.
