Chapter Sixteen Śrī Rādhikā-vivāha-varṇana Description of Śrī Rādhikā's Wedding

śrī-nārada uvāca
gāś cārayan nandanam aṅka-deśe
samlālayan dūratamaṁ sakāśāt
kalindajā-tīra-samīra-kampitaṁ
nando 'pi bhāṇḍīravanaṁ jagāma

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; gāḥ the cows ; cārayan herding ; nandanam son ; aṅka-deśe on the lap ; samlālayan caressing ; dūratamam for a long time ; sakāśāt in the presence ; kalindajā of the Yamunā ; tīra on the shore ; samīra the breeze ; kampitam moving ; nandaḥ Nanda ; api even ; bhāṇḍīravanam Bhāṇḍīravana ; jagāma went.

Translation

Herding the cows and holding His infant son in his arms, Nanda went to Bhāṇḍīravana, which trembled with the breezes coming from the Yamunā's shore.

kṛṣṇecchayā vegataro 'tha vāto
ghanair abhūn meduram ambaraṁ ca
tamāla-nīpa-druma-pallavaiś ca
patadbhir ejadbhir atīva-bhīkaiḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Then, by Kṛṣṇa's wish, the sky became filled with clouds and a strong wind fearfully moved the new tamāla and kadamba twigs and made them fall.

tad-andha-kāre mahati prajāte
bāle rudaty aṅka-gate 'ti-bhīte
nando bhayaṁ prāpa śiśuṁ sa bibhrad
dhariṁ pareśaṁ śaraṇaṁ jagāma

Translation

When a great and blinding darkness came and the frightened infant in his arm cried, Nanda became afraid. Clutching his boy, he took shelter of Lord Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

tadaiva koṭy-arka-samūha-dīptir
āgacchatīvācalati diśāsu
babhūva tasyāṁ vṛṣabhānu-putrīṁ
dadarśa rādhāṁ nava-nanda-rājaḥ

Translation

Then, as an effulgence greater than millions of suns converged on him from all directions, Nanda Mahārāja, the king of the nine Nandas, saw Vṛṣabhānu's daughter Rādhā, . . .

koṭīndu-bimba-dyutim ādadhānāṁ
nīlāmbarāṁ sundaram ādi-varṇām
mañjīra-dhīra-dhvani-nūpurāṇām
ābibhratīṁ śabdam atīva mañjum

Translation

. . . who was fair and splendid as millions of moons, dressed in blue garments, decorated with anklets and anklebells that tinkled sweetly, . . .

kāñcī-kalā-kaṅkana-śabda-miśrāṁ
hārāṅgulīyāṅgada-visphurantīm
śrī-nāsikā-mauktika-haṁśikībhiḥ
śrī-kanṭḥa-cūḍā-maṇi-kuṇḍalāḍhyām

Translation

. . . who wore tinkling bracelets and a tinkling belt, who was splendid with armlets, rings, and a necklace, and who was opulent with a nose-pearl, anklets, a necklace-jewel, and earrings.

tat-tejasā dharṣita āśu nando
natvātha tām āha kṛtāñjaliḥ san
ayaṁ tu sākṣāt puruṣottamas tvaṁ
priyāsya mukhyāsi tadaiva rādhe

Translation

Overwhelmed by Her effulgence, Nanda bowed down and with folded hands said, "He is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, and You, O Rādhā, are His first beloved.

guptaṁ tv idaṁ garga-mukhena vedmi
gṛhāṇa rādhe nija-nātham aṅkāt
enaṁ gṛhaṁ prāpaya megha-bhītaṁ
vadāmi cetthaṁ prakṛter guṇāḍhyaḥ

Translation

"I know this secret from the mouth of Garga Muni. O Rādhā, please take Your Lord from my arms. Now that the clouds have frightened Him, please take Him home. As if I were a person controlled by the modes of material nature, I say this (that He is frightened).

namāmi tubhyaṁ bhuvi rakṣa māṁ tvaṁ
kṛṣṇa-priyāsi prakṛteḥ parāṁ tvam śrutvā vacas tasya tadaiva rādhā
candrāvalī gopa-patim tam āha

Translation

"I offer my respectful obeisances to You. Please protect me in this world. You are Kṛṣṇa's dearmost. You are beyond the modes of material nature." Hearing these words, Śrī Rādhā, who was splendid as a host of moons, spoke to the king of the gopas.

śrī-rādhovāca
varaṁ paraṁ brūhi mahā-mate tvaṁ
yathepsitam sarva-janair durāpam
ahaṁ prasannā tava bhakti-bhāvān
mad-darśanaṁ durlabham eva nanda

Translation

Then Śrī Rādhā said: O noble-hearted one, ask for a benediction, for anything you wish, for anything impossible for anyone to attain. I am pleased by your sincere devotion. O Nanda it is very difficult for anyone to see Me.

yadi prasannāsi tadā bhaven me
bhaktir dṛḍhā kau yuvayoḥ padābje
satāṁ ca bhaktis tava bhakti-bhājāṁ
saṅgaḥ sadā me 'tha yuge yuge ca

Translation

If You are pleased then let me have firm devotion for the lotus feet of You both, and let me have devotion for Your devotees, and let me have their company. Let me have this millennium after millennium.

tathāstu coktvātha hariṁ karābhyāṁ
jagrāha rādhā nija-nātham aṅkāt
gate 'tha nande praṇate vrajeśe
tadā hi bhāṇḍīravanaṁ jagāma

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Saying "So be it", with both hands Rādhā took Lord Hari from Nanda's arms. When Vraja's king Nanda offered his obeisances and left, She went to Bhāṇḍīravana forest.

goloka-lokāc ca purā samāgatā
bhūmir nijaṁ svaṁ vapur ādadhānā
yā padmarāgādi-khacit-suvarṇā
babhūva sā tat-kṣaṇam eva sarvā

Translation

Then the spiritual ground came from the realm of Goloka. In a moment everything was golden and studded with rubies and many jewels.

vṛndāvanaṁ divya-vapur dadhānaṁ
vṛkṣair varaiḥ kāma-dughaiḥ sahaiva
kalinda-putrī ca suvarṇa-saudhaiḥ
śrī-ratna-sopānamayī babhūva

Vṛndāvana forest manifested a splendid transcendental form with beautiful desire-trees, and the Yamunā's shore had jewel steps and golden palaces.

govardhano ratna-śilāmayo 'bhūt
suvarṇa-śṛṅgaiḥ paritaḥ sphuradbhiḥ
mattālibhir nirjhara-sundarībhir
dārībhir uccāṅga-karīva rājan

Translation

Govardhana was made of jewels and had glistening golden peaks everywhere, maddened bees, and caves beautiful with swiftly-flowing streams. O king, it was like a great, gigantic elephant.

tadā nikuñjo 'pi nijaṁ vapur dadhat
sabhā-yutaṁ praṅgana-divya-maṇḍapam
vasanta-mādhurya-dharaṁ madhuvratair
mayūra-pārāvata-kokila-dhvanim

Translation

Then the forest grove assumed its real form with many assembly houses, courtyards, splendid pavilions, bumblebees, and the cooing of peacocks, pārāvatas, and cuckoos. It was filled with the sweetness of spring.

suvarṇa-ratnādi-khacit-patair vṛtaṁ
patat-patākāvalibhir virājitam
saraḥ-sphuṭadbhir bhramarāvalīḍhitair
vicarcitaṁ kāñcana-cāru-paṅkajaiḥ

Translation

It was filled with roofs of gold and jewels, splendid with fluttering flags, and anointed with beautiful blossoming lake-growing golden lotuses licked by swarms of black bees.

tadaiva sākṣāt puruṣottamottamo
babhūva kaiśora-vapur ghana-prabhaḥ
pītāmbaraḥ kaustubha-ratna-bhūṣaṇo
vaṁśī-dharo manmatha-rāśi-mohanaḥ

Translation

Then the Supreme Personality of Godhead became a teen-age youth splendid as a dark cloud, dressed in yellow garments, decorated with the Kaustubha gem, holding a flute, and more enchanting than a great host of Kāmadevas.

bhujena saṅgṛhya hasan priyāṁ harir
jagāma madhye su-vivāha-maṇḍapam
vivāha-sambhāra-yutaḥ sa-mekhalaṁ
sudarbhamad-vāri-ghaṭādi-maṇḍitam

Translation

Smiling, Lord Hari took His beloved by the arm, and with the wedding paraphernalia went to the wedding-pavilion, which was decorated with mekhalās, kuśa grass, waterpots, and many other things.

tatraiva siṁhāsana udgate vare
parasparaṁ sammalitau virejatuḥ
paraṁ bruvantau madhuraṁ ca dam-patī
sphurat-prabhau khe ca taḍid-ghanāv iva

Translation

Embracing and sweetly conversing on a beautiful throne there, They shone like a splendid lightning flash and a dark cloud in the sky.

tadāmbarād deva-varo vidhiḥ prabhuḥ
samāgatas tasya parasya sammukhe
natvā tad-aṅghrī hy uśatī girābhiḥ
kṛtāñjaliś cāru catur-mukho jagau

Translation

Then Lord Brahmā, the best of the demigods, came from the sky. Bowing down before Lord Kṛṣṇa, with folded hands he eloquently and sweetly spoke.

anādim ādyaṁ puruṣottamottamaṁ
śrī-kṛṣṇacandraṁ nija-bhakta-vatsalam
svayaṁ tv asaṅkhyāṇḍa-patiṁ parāt paraṁ
rādhā-patiṁ tvāṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajāmy aham

Translation

Śrī Brahmā said: I take shelter of You, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, without beginning, the beginning of everything, affectionate to Your devotees, the master of countless universes, greater than the greatest, and the husband of Rādhā.

goloka-nāthas tvam atīva-līlo
līlāvatīyaṁ nija-loka-līlā
vaikuṇṭha-nātho 'si yadā tvam eva lakṣmīs tadeyaṁ vṛṣabhānujā hi

Translation

You are the playful king of Goloka and She is Your playful companion. When You are the king of Vaikuṇṭha, She, the daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, is Goddess Lakṣmī.

tvaṁ rāmacandro janakātmajeyaṁ
bhūmau haris tvaṁ kamalālayeyam
yajṣāvatāro 'si yadā tadeyaṁ
śrī-dakṣiṇā strī prati-patnī-mukhyā

Translation

When in this world You are Rāmacandra, She is Janaka's daughter Sītā. When You are Lord Hari, She is Kamalā. When You are Yajṣa-avatāra, She is Śrī Dakṣiṇā, the best of wives.

tvaṁ nārasiṁho 'si ramā tadeyaṁ
nārāyaṇas tvaṁ ca nareṇa yuktaḥ
tad tv iyaṁ śāntir atīva sākṣāc
chāyeva yātā ca tavānurūpā

Translation

When You are Nṛsiṁha, She is Ramā. When You are Nara's friend Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi, She becomes Goddess Śānti and follows You like a shadow.

tvaṁ brahma ceyaṁ prakṛtis taṭasthā
kālo yademaṁ ca viduḥ pradhānam
mahān yadā tvaṁ jagad-aṅkuro 'si
rādhā tadeyaṁ sa-guṇā ca māyā

Translation

When You are Brahman, She is Prakṛti. When You are Time, the wise know She is Pradhāna. When You are the Mahat-tattva, from which the universes have sprouted, Rādhā is the potency Māyā, filled with the three modes.

yadāntarātmā viditaś caturbhis
tadā tv iyaṁ lakṣaṇā-rūpa-vṛttiḥ
yadā virāḍ-deha-dharas tvam eva
tadākhilaṁ vā bhuvi dhāraṇeyam

Translation

When You become the four things in the heart, She becomes the power of understanding something from a hint. When You become the universal form, which includes everything, She becomes the earth. Note: The four things in the heart are the heart, mind, intelligence, and false-ego.

śyāmaṁ ca gauraṁ viditaṁ dvidhā mahas
tavaiva sākṣāt puruṣottamottamam
goloka-dhāmādhipatiṁ pareśaṁ

goloka-dhāma-pravaraṁ prayāti saḥ
ihaiva saundarya-samṛddhi-siddhayo
bhavanti tasyāpi nisargataḥ punaḥ

tathāpi loka-vyavahāra-saṅgrahād

Brahmā performed the wedding-ceremony of Lord Hari and Śrī Rādhikā. He had Them circumambulate the sacred fire and bow down before it, and then Brahmā, the knower of the Vedas, recited the seven mantras.

Then with both hands Śrī Rādhā placed on Lord Kṛṣṇa's neck a lotus garland filled the the humming of bees. Then with both hands Lord Hari placed on Śrī Rādhā's neck a similar garland. Then Brahmā had Them bow down before the sacred fire.

samvāsayām āsa su-pīṭhayoś ca tau
kṛtāñjalī mauna-yutau pitāmahaḥ
tau pāṭhayām āsa tu pañca-mantrakaṁ

Placing the silent divine couple on two thrones, with folded hands Brahmā recited five mantras. Then, as a father gives away his daughter, Brahmā gave away Śrī Rādhā.

gandharva-vidyādhara-cāraṇāḥ kalaṁ

Translation

O king, then the demigods showered flowers, and the demigoddesses danced with the Vidyādharīs. The Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, Cāraṇas, and Kinnaras sang auspicious songs glorifying Lord Kṛṣṇa.

mṛdaṅga-vīṇā-muru-yaṣṭi-veṇavaḥ
śaṅkhānakā dundubhayaḥ sa-tālakāḥ
nedur muhur deva-varair divi sthitair
jayety abhūn maṅgala-śabdam uccakaiḥ

Translation

Again and again the great demigods in heaven sounded many mṛdaṅgas, vīṇās, murus, yaṣṭis, veṇus, śaṅkhas, anakas, and tālakas. Calling out "Glory!" they made an auspicious sound.

yathepsitaṁ tvaṁ vada vipra dakṣiṇām
tadā hariṁ prāha vidhiḥ prabho me

When Lord Hari said to Brahmā, "Please ask whatever you wish as dakṣiṇā," Brahmā replied to Lord Hari, "O Lord, as dakṣiṇā please give me devotion for Your feet."

śrī-rādhikāyāś ca pada-dvayaṁ śubham
natvā karābhyāṁ śirasā punaḥ punar
jagāma gehaṁ praṇataḥ praharṣitaḥ

When Lord Hari said "So be it", Brahmā again and again placed His head at the beautiful and auspicious feet of Lord Hari and Śrī Rādhikā. Then, happy and humbly bowing down, Brahmā left for his own home.

divyaṁ manojṣaṁ priyayā pradattam
jaghāsa kṛṣṇaḥ prahasan parātmā

Taking His beloved's hand, Lord Hari walked in the forest grove. Taking sweetly as He gazed at the beautiful Yamunā, Vṛndāvana forest, and the many flowering vines, He walked.

vilokya śākhāntaritaṁ ca rādhā
jagrāha pītāmbaram āvrajantī

Kṛṣṇa laughed and disappeared in a grove of beautiful flowering vines. Seeing Him hiding behind a tree, Rādhā went up to Him and grasped His yellow garment.

nilīyamānā yamunā-nikuñje
punar vrajantī hari-hasta-mātrāt

ghane yathā cañcalayā cakāsti
nīlo 'dri-rājo nikaṣāśma-khanyā
śrī-rādhayādyāstu tayā ramaṇyā

reme harī rāsa-raseṇa rādhayā
vṛndāvane bhṛṅga-mayūra-kūjal-
late caraty eva ratīśvaraḥ paraḥ

In the beautiful secluded rāsa-dance arena Lord Hari enjoyed the nectar of the rāsa dance with Śrī Rādhā. Lord Hari, the transcendental master of amorous pastimes, walked in Vṛndāvana forest filled with flowering vines and the sounds of peacocks and bees.

nanarta govardhana-kandarāsu
mattāliṣu prasravanaiḥ sarobhir
virājitāsu dyutimal-latāsu

rādhā-karāl lakṣa-dalaṁ sa padmaṁ

When They came to the Yamunā, Kṛṣṇa enjoyed a charming pastime with King Vṛṣabhānu's daughter. Taking the hundred-thousand-petal lotus from Rādhā's hand, He suddenly dove into the Yamunā's waters.

Laughing Rādhā quickly took Lord Hari's flute, stick, and yellow cloth. When Lord Hari said, "Give back My flute!" She mocked Him and said, "You give back My lotus!"

hariṁ vilokyāśu rurodha rādhikā
tanoṣi māyāṁ nu kathaṁ hare mayi

He became an infant crawling on the ground and crying, just as Nanda had given Him before. When She saw Lord Hari in this way, Śrī Rādhikā cried out, "O Lord Hari, why do You show this illusion to Me?"

itthaṁ rudantīṁ sahasā viṣaṇṇām
ākāśa-vāg āha tadaiva rādhām
śocaṁ nu rādhe iha mā kuru tvaṁ
manorathas te bhaviyā hi paścāt

As despondent Rādhā wept, a voice from the sky said, O Rādhā, don't lament. In time Your desire will be fulfilled."

gatāśu gehe vraja-rāja-patnyāḥ
dattvā ca bālaṁ kila nanda-patnyā
uvāca dattaḥ pathi te ca bhartrā

Translation

Hearing this, Rādhā took Lord Hari and quickly went to the home of Vraja's queen. Giving the child to Nanda's wife, She said, "Your husband gave Him to Me on the path."

uvāca rādhāṁ nṛpa-nanda-gehinī
dhanyāsi rādhe vṛṣabhānu-kanyake
tvayā śiśur me parirakṣito bhayān
meghāvṛte vyomni bhayāturo vane

Translation

King Nanda's wife said to Rādhā, "O Rādhā, O daughter of King Vṛṣabhānu, You are fortunate. When the sky was covered with clouds and my child became frightened in the forest, You protected Him."

sampūjitā ślāghita-saḍ-guṇā sā
su-nanditā śrī-vṛṣabhānu-putrī
tadā hy anujṣāpya yaśomatīṁ sā
śanaiḥ sva-gehaṁ hi jagāma rādhā

Translation

After She was greatly honored and Her transcendental virtues praised, Śrī Vṛṣabhānu's happy daughter, taking permission from Mother Yaśodā, slowly returned to Her own home.

itthaṁ harer gupta-kathā ca varṇitā
rādhā-vivāhasya su-maṅgalāvṛtā
śrutā ca yair vā paṭhitā ca pāṭhitā
tān pāpa-vṛndā na kadā spṛśanti

Translation

Sins will never touch they who hear, read silently, or recite aloud this auspicious and confidential narration of the wedding of Śrī Rādhā.
