śrī-nārada uvāca atha rātryāṁ vyatītāyāṁ māyā-yoṣid-vapur hariḥ rādhā-duḥkha-praśānty-arthaṁ vṛṣabhānor gṛhaṁ yayau

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; atha—then; rātryām—at night; vyatītāyām—passed; māyā-yoṣid-vapuḥ—trasnformed into a young woman; hariḥ—Kṛṣṇa; rādhā—of Rādhā; duḥkha—to sufferings; praśānti—pacification; artham—for the purpose; vṛṣabhānoḥ—of King Vṛṣabhānu; gṛham—to the home; yayau—went.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: When the night had passed, Lord Kṛṣṇa, again magically transformed into a woman, went to King Vṛṣabhānu's palace to quiet Rādhā's distress.

rādhā tam āgataṁ vīkṣya samutthāyāti-harṣitā dattāsanā vidhānena pūjayām āsa maithila

Synonyms

rādhā—Rādhā; tam—Him; āgatam—arrived; vīkṣya—seeing; samutthāya—rising; ati-harṣitā—very happy; datta—offered; āsanā—a seat; vidhānena—properly; pūjayām āsa—worshiped; maithila—O king of Mithilā.

Translation

When She saw He had come, Rādhā became very happy. Standing up, She offered Him a seat and worshiped Him according to custom.

śrī-rādhovāca tvayā vināhaṁ niśi duḥkhitāsaṁ tvayy āgatāyāṁ sakhi labdha-vastu-vat

Translation

duḥkhaṁ tathā bhāmini sat-prasaṅgataḥ śrī-rādhā uvāca—Śrī Rādhā said; tvayā—You; vinā—without; aham—I; niśi—at night; duḥkhitā—unhappy; āsam—was; tvayy—in You; āgatāyām—come; sakhī—O friend; labdha—attained; vastu—vaulable; vat—like; pūrvam—before; hy—indeed; apathyasya—of what is not beneficial; sukham—happiness; yathā—as; tataḥ—so; duḥkham—unhappiness; tathā—so; bhāmini—O beautiful one; sat-prasaṅgataḥ—from the company. Śrī Rādhā said: I was very unhappy at night without You. O friend, now that You have come I am like one who has found a great treasure. O beautiful one, first You made Me happy and then You made Me sad.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Hearing these words, Gopadevatā became sad. As if She were morose, She did not say anything to Śrī Rādhā.

vijṣāya kheda-sampannāṁ rādhikā gopadevatām sakhībhiḥ samvicāryātha jagāda sneha-tat-parā

Synonyms

vijṣāya—understanding; kheda-sampannām—unhappy; rādhikā—Rādhā; gopadevatām—Gopadevatā; sakhībhiḥ—by the friends; samvicārya—considered; atha—then; jagāda—spoke; sneha-tat-parā—full of affection.

Translation

Understanding that Gopadevatā had become unhappy, Rādhā and Her friends considered the situation. Full of affection, Rādhā spoke.

śrī-rādhovāca vimanās tvaṁ kathaṁ bhadre vada māṁ gopadevate mātrā bhārtrā nanāndrā vā śvaśrā krodhena bhartsitā

Translation

Śrī Rādhā said: Beautiful one, why are You unhappy? O Gopadevatā, please tell Me. Did Your mother, brother, sister, or sister-in-law speak angry words to You?

sapatnī-kṛta-doṣeṇa sva-bhartur virahena vā anyatra lagna-cittena vimanāḥ kiṁ manohare

Translation

Did a co-wife fault You? Are You separated from Your brother? Does something else trouble Your heart? O beautiful one, why are You unhappy?

mārga-khedena vā kaccid vihvalābhūd rujāthavā śīghraṁ vada mahā-bhāge svasya duḥkhasya kāraṇam

Did some trouble happen on the way here? Do You have a sickness? O beautiful one, please tell me at length why You are unhappy.

kṛṣṇa-bhaktam ṛte vipraṁ yena kenāpi kutsitam kathitaṁ te 'tha rambhoru tac-cikitsāṁ karomy aham

Translation

Did some brāhmaṇa who was not a devotee of Kṛṣṇa speak ill to You? O girl whose thighs are like banana trees, describe it, and I will cure Your unhappiness.

gajāśvādīni ratnāni vastrāṇi ca dhanāni ca mandirāṇi vicitrāṇi gṛhāṇa tvaṁ yadīcchasi

Synonyms

gaja—elephants; aśva—horses; ādīni—beginning with; ratnāni—jewels; vastrāṇi—garments; ca—and; dhanāni—wealth; ca—and; mandirāṇi—palaces; vicitrāṇi—wonderful; gṛhāṇa—take; tvam—You; yadi—if; icchasi—You wish.

Translation

If You wish, please take many elephants, horses, jewels, costly garments, coins, and wonderful palaces.

dhanaṁ dattvā tanuṁ rakṣet tanuṁ dattvā trapaṁ vyadhāt dhanaṁ tanuṁ trapaṁ dadyān mitra-kāryārtham eva hi dhanaṁ dattvā ca satataṁ rakṣet prāṇān nirantaram

Synonyms

dhanam—wealth; dattvā—having given; tanum—body; rakṣet—may protect; tanum—body; dattvā—having given; trapam—modesty; vyadhāt—may give; dhanam—wealth; tanum—body; trapam—modesty; dadyān—may guve; mitra-kāryārtham—for the benefit of a friend; eva—indeed; hi—indeed; dhanam—welath; dattvā—having given; ca—and; satatam—always; rakṣet—may protect; prāṇān—life; nirantaram—always.

Translation

By giving wealth one preserves another's body. By preserving the body one gives modesty. For the welfare of a friend, one should give Her wealth and thus preserve Her body and Her modesty. By always giving wealth one always preserves the lives of Her friends.

yo mitratāṁ niṣkapaṭaṁ karoti niṣkāraṇaṁ dhanyatamaḥ sa eva vidhāya maitrīṁ kapaṭaṁ vidadhyāt taṁ lampaṭaṁ hetu-paṭaṁ naṭaṁ dhik

yaḥ—one who; mitratām—friendship; niṣkapaṭam—sincere; karoti—does; niṣkāraṇam—unmotivated; dhanyatamaḥ—the most fortunate; sa—sh; eva—indeed; vidhāya—placing; maitrīm—friendship; kapaṭam—false; vidadhyāt—places; tam—that; lampaṭam—cheater; hetu-paṭam—false reason; naṭam—and actor; dhik—fie.

Translation

One who is a sincere, unselfish friend is glorious. One who is not sincere in her friendship is a cheater, or an actor. Fie on her!

tasyāḥ prema-vacaḥ śrutvā bhagavān gopadevatā prahasann āha rājendra śrī-rādhāṁ kīrti-nandinīm

Translation

O king, when He heard Her words of love, Lord Gopadevatā smiled and spoke to Kīrtī's daughter Rādhā.

śrī-gopadevatovāca rādhe vrajan sānu-gires taṭīṣu saṅkoca-vīthīṣu manoharāsu yāntīṁ svato māṁ dadhi-vikrayārthaṁ rurodha mārge nava-nanda-putraḥ

Translation

Śrī Gopadevatā said: As He was walking on the beautiful narrow pathways by the hillside, and I was also walking there to sell some yogurt, Nanda's son, Kṛṣṇa, stopped Me.

vaṁśī-dharo vetra-karaḥ kare māṁ tvaraṁ gṛhītvā prahasan vilajjaḥ mahyaṁ karādāna-dhanāya dānaṁ dehīti jalpan vipine rasajṣaḥ

vaṁśī—a flute; dharaḥ—holding; vetra—a stick; karaḥ—in His hand; kare—in the hand; mām—Me; tvaram—quickly; gṛhītvā—taking; prahasan—laughing; vilajjaḥ—shameless; mahyam—to Me; karādāna-dhanāya—to pay atoll; dānam—payment; dehi—give; iti—thus; jalpan—speaking; vipine—in the forest; rasajṣaḥ—expert at tasting nectar.

Translation

Carrying a flute and holding a stick in His hand, the shameless fellow grabbed My hand, laughed, and said: "Now You must pay a tax to Me!" Talking in this way, He enjoyed in the forest.

tubhyaṁ na dasyāmi kadāpi dānaṁ svayambhuve gorasa-lampaṭāya evaṁ mayokte vacane 'tha bhāṇḍaṁ nītvā viśīrṇī-kṛtavān sa dadhnaḥ

Translation

When I said, "I will never pay anything to You, a rake greedy after yogurt", He took the yogurt-pot and broke it.

bhāṇḍaṁ sa bhittvā dadhi kiṁ ca pītvā nītvottarīyaṁ mama ced urīyam nandīśvarādrer vidiśaṁ jagāma tenāham ārād vimanāḥ sma jātā

Translation

After breaking the pot, He drank the yogurt, grabbed My bodice, and then ran off toward Nandīśvara Hill. That is why I am unhappy.

jātyā sa gopaḥ kila kṛṣṇa-varṇo 'dhunī na vīro na hi śīla-rūpaḥ yasmiṁs tvayā prema kṛtaṁ su-śīle tyajāśu nirmohanam adya kṛṣṇam

Translation

Although by birth He is a gopa, today He has become a low-class śūdra. He is not a hero, and He does not have good character. O saintly girl, today You should be free of illusion. Give up Your love for this Kṛṣṇa.

itthaṁ sa-vairaṁ paruṣaṁ vacas tac chrutvā ca rādhā vṛṣabhānu-nandinī su-vismitā vākya-pade sarasvatī- padaṁ smayantī nijagāda tāṁ prati

Translation

Surprised to hear these harsh and hateful words, King Vṛṣabhānu's daughter Rādhā smiled and eloquently spoke to Her.

Śrī Rādhā said: Foolish friend, why do You criticize Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original and perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead who, to enjoy pastimes, remove the earth's burden, and bring auspiciousness to the devotees, has descended to the earth, to attain whom Brahmā Śiva and all the demigods perform great yoga austerities, and the honey pollen of whose lotus feet Dattātreya, Śukadeva, Kapila, Asuri, and Aṅgirā touch?

Translation

The gopas protect the cows. Without touching water, they are covered by cows' dust. The chant the cows' names. Day and night they see the cows' beautiful faces. On this earth no birth better than a gopas' birth.

tat-kṛṣṇa-varṇa-vilasat-su-kalāṁ samīkṣya tasmin vilagna-manasā su-sukhaṁ vihāya unmatta-vad vrajati dhāvanti nīlakaṇṭho bibhrat kaparda-viṣa-bhasma-kapāla-sarpān

Translation

Gazing at Kṛṣṇa's dark handsomeness, Śiva became attached to Him. Giving up all normal happiness, wearing matted hair, drinking poison, covered with ashes, and decorated with snakes and skulls, Śiva now walks and runs about like a madman.

svarloka-siddha-muni-yakṣa-marud-gaṇānāṁ pālāḥ samasta-nara-kinnara-nāga-nāthāḥ yat-pāda-padmam aniśaṁ praṇipatya bhaktyā labdha-śriyaḥ kila baliṁ pradaduḥ sma tasmai

Translation

He is the protector of the svarlokas, siddhas, munis, yakṣas, and maruts. He is the master of all the humans, kinnaras, and nāgas. Day and night the glorious great souls devotedly bow before His lotus feet and make offerings to Him.

vatsāgha-kāliya-bakārjuna-dhenukānāṁ ācakravāta-śakaṭāsura-pūtanānām eṣāṁ vadhaḥ kim uta tasya yaśo murārer yaḥ koṭiśo 'ṇḍa-nicayodbhava-nāśa-hetuḥ

Translation

He killed Vatsāsura, Agha, Kāliya, Baka, the arjuna trees, Dhenuka, Tṛṇāvārta, Sakaṭāsura, and Pūtanā! How great are His glories? He is the creator and destroyer of many millions of universes!

Translation

To Him, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, no one is more dear than His devotee. Neither Śiva, Brahmā, Lakṣmī, nor Balarāma is more dear. Lord Kṛṣṇa, the crest-jewel of all persons, His heart now bound with love, becomes the humble follower of His devotees.

gacchan nijaṁ janam anu prapunāti lokān āvedayan hari-jane sva-ruciṁ mahātmā tasmād atīva bhajatāṁ bhagavān mukundo muktiṁ dadāti na kadāpi su-bhakti-yogam

gacchan—going; nijam—to His own; janam—people; anu—following; prapunāti—pruifies; lokān—the people; āvedayan—proclaiming; hari-jane—for the devotees; sva-rucim—His own love; mahātmā—the Lord; tasmāt—from that; atīva—greatlly; bhajatām—of the devotees; bhagavān—the Lord; mukundaḥ—Mukunda; muktim—liberation; dadāti—gives; na—not; kadāpi—ever; su-bhakti-yogam—pure devotional service.

Translation

Following His devotees here and there, He purifies the worlds. He loudly declares His love for His devotees. To those who worship Him, Lord Kṛṣṇa easily gives liberation, but He does not easily give pure devotional service.

Translation

O Rādhā, Your intelligence laughs at Bṛhaspati and Your works cleverly mock the Vedas. When the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself comes here and confirms Your words, only then will I believe them.

Śrī Rādhā said: O girl with the beautiful eyebrows, tell Me, if the Supreme Personality of Godhead personally comes here, what will I do about You? If the Lord who wears a forest garland comes, I will not be able to give My palace and all My wealth to You.

Translation

O saintly one, I am here. What yakṣī, asurī, demigoddess, or kinnarī could have fooled You with magic as I have? You would not have believed them. Nor would You have believed a snake-goddess either.
