evaṁ vicintya manasā
śivo vāsuriṇā saha
tau kṛṣṇa-daṛṣṇārthāya
jagmatur vraja-maṇḍalam

Synonyms

evam — thus ; vicintya — considering ; manasā — with his heart ; śivaḥ — Lord Śiva ; vā — or ; āsuriṇā — Asuri Muni ; saha — with ; tau — both ; kṛṣṇa — of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; daṛṣṇa — the sight ; arthāya — for the purpose ; jagmatuḥ — went ; vraja-maṇḍalam — to the circle of Vraja.

Translation

Thinking in this way, Śiva and Asuri went to the circle of Vraja to see Lord Kṛṣṇa.

divya-druma-latā-kuñja-
tolikā-puñja-śobhitam
paśyantau tau divya-bhūmiṁ
kālindī-nikaṭe gatau

Synonyms

divya — splendid ; druma — trees ; latā — vines ; kuñja — groves ; tolikā — archways ; pu 24ja — filled ; śobhitam — beautified ; paśyantau — seeing ; tau — they ; divya-bhūmim — splendid transcendental place ; kālindī-nikaṭe — near the Yamunā ; gatau — went.

Translation

Near the Yamunā they went to a splendid transcendental place filled with splendid groves of trees, vines, and archways.

goloka-vāsinyo naryo
vetra-hastā mahā-balāḥ
cakrur balāt tan-niṣedhaṁ
mārga-sthā dvāra-pālikāḥ

Synonyms

goloka-vāsinyaḥ — residing in Goloka ; naryaḥ — women ; vetra-hastā — with sticks in their hands ; mahā-balāḥ — very strong ; cakruḥ — did ; balāt — forcibly ; tan-niṣedham — forbidding them ; mārga-sthā — standing on the path ; dvāra-pālikāḥ — guarding the entrance.

Translation

Many very powerful, stick-wielding women of Goloka guarded the entrance. Blocking the path, they and forbade them to enter.

tāv ūcatuś cāgatau svaḥ
kṛṣṇa-darśana-lālasau
tāv āhur nṛpa-śārdūla
mārga-sthā dvāra-pālikāḥ

Synonyms

tau ūcatuḥ — they said ; ca — and ; āgatau — come ; svaḥ — own ; kṛṣṇa-darśana-lālasau — yeanring to see Kṛṣṇa ; tau — they ; āhuḥ — said ; nṛpa-śārdūla — O tiger of kings ; mārga-sthā — standing on the path ; dvāra-pālikāḥ — the doorkeepers.

Translation

The two of them said, "Yearning to see Lord Kṛṣṇa, we have come here". O tiger of kings, as they blocked the path, the entrance-guards spoke to them.

śrī-dvāra-pālikā ūcuḥ
sarvato vṛndakāraṇyaṁ
koṭiśaḥ koṭiśo vayam
rāsa-rakṣāṁ sadā kurmo
nyastā kṛṣṇena bho dvijau

Synonyms

śrī-dvāra-pālikā ūcuḥ — the gatekeepers said ; sarvataḥ — everywhere ; vṛndakāraṇyam — in Vṛndāvana ; koṭiśaḥ koṭiśaḥ — in millions and millions ; vayam — we ; rāsa-rakṣām — protecting the rasa dance ; sadā — always ; kurmaḥ — do ; nyastā — placed ; kṛṣṇena — by Lord Kṛṣṇa ; bhaḥ — O ; dvijau — brāhmaṇas.

Translation

The entrance guards said: There are many millions of millions of us everywhere in Vṛndāvana. Appointed by Lord Kṛṣṇa, we eternally guard the rāsa dance.

Verse text

eko 'sti puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇo
nirjane rāsa-maṇḍale
anyo na yāti rahasi
gopī-yūthaṁ vinā kvacit

Synonyms

ekaḥ — one ; asti — is ; puruṣaḥ — male ; kṛṣṇaḥ — Kṛṣṇa ; nirjane — secluded ; rāsa-maṇḍale — in the rasa-dance circle ; anyaḥ — another ; na — not ; yāti — goes ; rahasi — in secret ; gopī-yūtham — gopīs ; vinā — without ; kvacit — anywhere.

Translation

In this secluded rāsa-dance circle Kṛṣṇa is the only male. Except for Him there are only gopīs here.

Verse text

ced didṛkṣū yuvāṁ tasya
snānaṁ māna-sarovare
kurutaṁ tatra gopītvaṁ
prāpyāśu vrajataṁ munī

Synonyms

cet — if ; didṛkṣū — with a desire to see ; yuvām — you ; tasya — of Him ; snānam — bath ; māna-sarovare — in mana-sarivara lake ; kurutam — you will do ; tatra — there ; gopītvam — status of being gopīs ; prāpya — attaining ; āśu — at once ; vrajatam — go ; munī — O sages.

Translation

O sages, if you wish to see Lord Kṛṣṇa, then please bath in the Māna-sarovara lake. In that way you will become gopīs, and then you may enter.

śrī-nārada uvāca
ity uktau tau muni-śivau
snātvā māna-sarovare
gopītvaṁ prāpya sahasā
jagmatū rāsa-maṇḍale

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca — Śrī Nārada said ; ity — thus ; uktau — addressed ; tau — they ; muni-śivau — Asuri Muni and Lord śiva ; snātvā — bathing ; māna-sarovare — in mana-sarivaras ; gopītvam — the status of gopīs ; prāpya — attaining ; sahasā — at once ; jagmatū — went ; rāsa-maṇḍale — to the rasa dance circle.

Translation

Bathing in Māna-sarovara, and at once becoming gopīs, Lord Siva and Asuri Muni went to the circle of the rāsa dance.

sauvarṇa-prakhacit-padma-
rāga-bhūmi-manohare
mādhavī-latikā-vṛndā-
kadambācchādite śubhe

Synonyms

sauvarṇa — with gold ; prakhacit — paved ; padmarāga — rubies ; bhūmi — ground ; manohare — beautiful ; mādhavī-latikā-vṛnda — with madhavi vines ; kadamba — and kadamba trees ; ācchādite — shaded ; śubhe — beautiful.

Translation

In a beautiful place paved with gold and rubies, shaded by kadamba trees and flowering mādhavī vines, . . .

vasanta-candra-kaumudyā
pradīpte sarva-kauśale
yamunā-ratna-sopāna-
tolikābhir virājite

Synonyms

vasanta-candra-kaumudyā- — with spring moonlight ; pradīpte — illumined ; sarva-kauśale — ausopicious and beautiful ; yamunā — to the Yamunā ; ratna — jewel ; sopāna — stairways ; tolikābhiḥ — and arches ; virājite — splendid.

Translation

. . . filled with all beauty, splendid with spring moonlight, glorious with arches and jewel stairways leading to the Yamunā, . . .

mayūra-haṁsa-datyūha-
kokilaiḥ kujite pare
yamunānila-nīlaijat-
taru-pallava-śobhite

Synonyms

mayūra — peacocks ; haṁsa — swans ; datyūha — datyuhas ; kokilaiḥ — cuckoos ; kujite — cooing ; pare — on the other shore ; yamunā — of the Yamunā ; anila — breeze ; nīla — dark ; aijat — going ; taru — trees ; pallava — leaves ; śobhite — beautiful.

Translation

. . . filled with cooing peacocks, swans, datyūhas, and cuckoos, fanned by the Yamunā's breezes, beautiful with newly-blossoming trees, . . .

sabhā-maṇḍapa-vīthībhiḥ
prāṅgana-stambha-paṅktibhiḥ
patat-patākair divyābhaiḥ
sauvarṇaiḥ kalaśair vṛte

Synonyms

sabhā-maṇḍapa-vīthībhiḥ — with assembly-houses ; prāṅgana — courtyards ; stambha-paṅktibhiḥ — with rows of columns ; patat-patākaiḥ — with fluttering flags ; divyābhaiḥ — splendid ; sauvarṇaiḥ — golden ; kalaśaiḥ — with domes ; vṛte — filled.

Translation

. . . filled with meeting houses that had courtyards with rows of pillars, splendid fluttering flags, and golden domes, . . .

śvetāruṇaiḥ puṣpa-saṅghaiḥ
puṣpa-mandira-vartmabhiḥ
ali-kolāhalair vyapte
vāditra-madhura-dhvanau

Synonyms

śveta — white ; aruṇaiḥ — and red ; puṣpa-saṅghaiḥ — flowers ; puṣpa-mandira-vartmabhiḥ — with the path to flower palaces ; ali — of bees ; kolāhalaiḥ — with a tumult ; vyapte — filled ; vāditra-madhura-dhvanau — with the sweet sounds of musical instruments.

Translation

. . . filled with flower-palaces of red and white blossoms, the buzzing of bees, and sweet sounds of musical instruments, . . .

sahasra-dala-padmānāṁ
vāyunā manda-gāminā
śītalena su-puṇyena
sarvataḥ surabhī-kṛte

Synonyms

sahasra-dala-padmānām — thousand petal lotuses ; vāyunā — with a breeze ; manda-gāminā — gentle ; śītalena — cool ; su-puṇyena — very pure ; sarvataḥ — everywhere ; surabhī-kṛte — scented.

Translation

. . . and fragrant with pure and cooling breezes carrying the scent of thousand-petal lotuses, . . .

koṭi-candra-prakāśayā
padminyā haṁsa-gāminyā
rādhayā samalaṅkṛtam

Translation

O Supreme Personality of Godhead, leaving all Your transcendental abodes and making them devoid of Your presence, You have now come to Nanda's home to remove the earth's great burden and to bring auspiciousness to Your devotees.

Translation

You are the original and perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, glorious with incarnations that display a part, a part of a part, or a part of a part of a part of Your power. With Your many empowered inacarnations You maintain the universe. With the sweet rāsa dance You decorate the forest of Vṛndāvana.

You are decorated with beautiful flowers taken from Vṛndāvana's vines. You are the ornament Śrī Rādhā wears on Her neck and over Her heart. You are the master of the rāsa-dance circle. You are the master of the circle of Vraja. You are the protector of the circle of the universes.

śaṣṭi-varṣa-sahasrāṇi
yuvayos tapatos tapaḥ
mad-darśanaṁ tena jātaṁ
sarvato nairapekṣayoḥ

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Renouncing everything, the two of you performed austerities for sixty-thousand years in order to see Me.

niṣkiñcano yo śāntaś cā-
jāta-śatruḥ sa mat-sakhā
tasmād yuvābhyāṁ manasā
vriyatām īpsito varaḥ

niṣkiñcanaḥ — with no material wealth ; yaḥ — one who ; śāntaḥ — peaceful ; ca — and ; ajāta — not born ; śatruḥ — enemies ; sa — he ; mat-sakhā — My friend ; tasmāt — from that ; yuvābhyām — of you both ; manasā — with the heart ; vriyatām — may be chosen ; īpsitaḥ — desired ; varaḥ — benediction.

Translation

You do not crave material wealth, you are peaceful, you do not think anyone your enemy, and you are my friends. Therefore, please choose a benediction. Choose whatever your hearts desire.

namo 'stu bhūman yuvayoḥ padābje
sadaiva vṛndāvana-madhya-vāsa
na rocate no 'nyam atas tvad-aṅghrer
namo yuvābhyāṁ hari-rādhikābhyām

Lord Śiva and Asuri Muni said: O Lord who resides in Vṛndāvana, we eternally offer our obeisances to Your lotus feet. Nothing other than Your lotus feet gives us any happiness. O Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, we offer our respectful obeisances to You!

Translation

nikuñja-pārśve puline vaṁśīvaṭa-samīpataḥ śivo 'pi cāsuri-munir nityaṁ vāsaṁ cakāra ha śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; tathāstu—so be it; ca—and; uktvā—saying; bhagavān—the Lord; vṛndāraṇye—in Vṛndāvana; manohare—beautiful; kālindī-nikaṭe—near the Yamunā; rājan—O king; rāsa-maṇḍala-maṇḍite—decorated by the circle of the rasa dance; nikuñja-pārśve—in the side of the forest; puline—on the shore; vaṁśīvaṭa-samīpataḥ—near Vamsivata; śivaḥ—Lord Śiva; api—and; ca—and; āsuri-muniḥ—Asuri Muni; nityam—eternally; vāsam—residence; cakāra—did; ha—indeed. The Lord then said, "So be it." From that moment Lord Śiva and Asuri Muni made their residence there, at Vaṁśīvaṭa, where the forest grove by the Yamunā's shore is decorated with the circle of the rāsa dance.

Then Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa enjoyed a rāsa dance with the gopīs in Padmākara forest, which was filled with buzzing bees and fragrant flower pollen.

kṛtā kṛṣṇena maithila
gopīnāṁ rāsa-līlāyāṁ
vyatītā kṣaṇavat sukhaiḥ

Translation

At sunrise all the gopīs, their desires fulfilled, returned to their homes.

prāyayau nanda-nandanaḥ
vṛṣabhānu-puraṁ prāgād
vṛṣabhānu-sutā tvaram

Lord Kṛṣṇa went to Nanda's palace and Śrī Rādhā hurried to King Vṛṣabhānu's palace.

trivargya-daṁ janānāṁ tu mumukṣūṇāṁ su-mukti-dam mayā tavāgre kathitaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi evam—thus; śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya—of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra; rāsākhyānam—named rasa; manoharam—beautiful; sarva-pāpa—all sins; haram—removing; puṇyam—pure; kāma-dam—fulfilling desires; maṅgalāyanam—auspicious; trivargya-dam—granting the three goals of life; janānām—of the people; tu—indeed; mumukṣūṇām—of they who desire liberation; su-mukti-dam—giving liberation; mayā—by me; tava—of you; agre—in the presence; kathitam—spoken; kim—what?; bhūyaḥ—more; śrotum—to hear; icchasi—you wish.
