Synonyms

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca—Śrī Bahulāśva said; aghāsurādi-daityānām—of the demons headed by Aghasura; jyotiḥ—the light; kṛṣṇe—in Kṛṣṇa; samāviśat—entered; śrīdāmni—in Śrīdama; sakhacūḍāsya—of sankhacuda; kasmāl—why?; līnam—merging; babhūva—was; ha—indeed.

Translation

The spiritual sparks that emerged from Aghāsura and the other demons entered Lord Kṛṣṇa. Why did the spark of light from Śaṅkhacūḍa enter Śrīdāmā?

etad vada mahā-buddhe tvaṁ parāvara-vittama aho śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya caritaṁ paramādbhutam

Synonyms

etat—this; vada—tell; mahā-buddhe—O wise one; tvam—You; parāvara-vittama—the best of they who know everything; ahaḥ—Oh; śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya—of Śrī Kṛṣṇa; caritam—the pastimes; paramādbhutam—very wonderful.

Translation

O intelligent one, O best of they who know everything, please describe to me this very wonderful pastime of Lord Kṛṣṇacandra.

śrī-nārada uvāca purā goloka-vṛttantaṁ nārāyaṇa-mukhāc chrutam sarva-pāpa-haraṁ puṇyaṁ śṛṇu rājan mahā-mate

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: O noble-hearted king, please hear this story, which describes pastimes that happened in Goloka, and which I heard from the mouth of Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi.

rādhā śrīr virajā bhūś ca tisro patnyo 'bhavan hareḥ tāsāṁ rādhā priyātīva śrī-kṛṣṇasya mahātmanaḥ

Translation

Rādhā, Śrī, Virajā, and Bhū were the four wives of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Of them Rādhā was most dear to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

rādhikā-samayā rājan koṭi-candra-prakāśayā kuṣje virajayā reme ekānte caikadhā prabhuḥ

Synonyms

rādhikā-samayā—equal to Rādhā; rājan—O king; koṭi-candra-prakāśayā—the splendor of ten million moons; kuṣje—in theb forest; virajayā—Viaraj; reme—enjoyed; ekānte—alone; ca—and; ekadhā—once; prabhuḥ—the Supreme Lord.

Translation

O king, one day in a secluded forest grove the Lord enjoyed pastimes with Virajā, who was splendid as ten million moons and very much like Rādhā.

sapatnī-sahitaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ rādhā śrutvā sakhī-mukhāt atīva vimanā jātā sapatnī-saukhya-duḥkhitā

Synonyms

sapatnī-sahitam—with rivalry; kṛṣṇam—Kṛṣṇa; rādhā—Rādhā; śrutvā—hearing; sakhī-mukhāt—from a friend's mouth; atīva—very; vimanā—jealous; jātā—bacme; sapatnī-saukhya-duḥkhitā—unhappy at a rival's happiness.

Translation

When from a friend's mouth She heard that Kṛṣṇa had enjoyed pastimes with Her rival, Rādhā, unhappy at Her rival's happiness, became filled with jealous anger.

Translation

vicitra-ratna-sauvarṇa- muktā-dāma-vilambitam patāka-hema-kalaśaiḥ koṭibhir maṇḍitaṁ ratham samāruhya sakhīnāṁ sa vetra-hastair daśārbudaiḥ hariṁ draṣṭuṁ jagāmāśu śrī-rādhā bhagavat-priyā śata-yojana-vistāram—eight hundred mills long; śata-yojanam—eight hundred miles; ūrdhva-gam—high; koty—ten million; aśvinī—horses; samayuktam—with; koṭi-sūrya-sama-prabham—splendid as ten million suns; vicitra-ratna-sauvarṇa—with wonderful jewels and gold; muktā-dāma-vilambitam—with strings of pearls; patāka—flags; hema—gold; kalaśaiḥ—domes; koṭibhiḥ—with ten million; maṇḍitam—decorated; ratham—chariot; samāruhya—mounting; sakhīnām—of friends; sa—She; vetra-hastaiḥ—with a stick in and; daśārbudaiḥ—with one billion; harim—Kṛṣṇa; draṣṭum—to see; jagāma—went; āśu—at once; śrī-rādhā—Śrī Rādhā; bhagavat-priyāKṛṣṇa's beloved. Translation

Translation

Seeing powerful Śrīdāmā guarding the entrance by Kṛṣṇa's order, Rādhā and Her friends rebuked him with many words.

vetraiḥ santāḍya sahasā dvāri gantuṁ samudyatā sakhī-kolāhalaṁ śrutvā harir antaradhīyata

Synonyms

vetraiḥ—with sticks; santāḍya—hitting; sahasā—at once; dvāri—at the door; gantum—to go; samudyatā—about; sakhī—of the gopīs; kolāhalam—commotion; śrutvā—hearing; hariḥ—Kṛṣṇa; antaradhīyata—disappeared.

Translation

Eager to enter, Rādhā and Her friends began to hit Śrīdāmā with sticks. Hearing the great commotion the gopīs were making, Lord Kṛṣṇa disappeared.

rādhā-bhayāc ca virajā nadī bhūtvāvahat tadā koṭi-yojana-māyāyaṁ goloke sahasā nadī

Synonyms

rādhā-bhayāt—ot of fear of Rādhā; ca—and; virajā—Viarajā; nadī—a river; bhūtvā—becoming; avahat—flowed; tadā—then; koṭi-yojana-māyāyam—eighty-million miles; goloke—in Goloka; sahasā—at once; nadī—river.

Translation

Out of fear of Rādhā, Virajā transformed herself into a river that flowed for eighty-million miles around Gokula.

sahasā kuṇḍalī-kṛtvā śuśubhe 'bdhir ivāvanim ratna-puṣpair vicitrāṅgā yathoṣṇiṅ-mudritā tathā

sahasā—at once; kuṇḍalī-kṛtvā—encircling; śuśubhe—shone; abdhiḥ—an ocean; iva—like; avanim—the earth; ratna-puṣpaiḥ—with jewel flowers; vicitrāṅgā—wonderful form; yathoṣṇiṅ-mudritā—as if crowned; tathā—then.

Translation

She then encircled Goloka as an ocean encircles a continent. She was glorious as if she were decorated with flowers and jewels and decorated with a crown.

hariṁ gataṁ taṁ vijṣāya nadī-bhūtaṁ ca taṁ tathā ālokya tan-nikuṣjaṁ ca sva-kuṣjaṁ rādhikā yayau

Synonyms

Translation

Looking at the forest there and the river (that Viarajā had become), and thinking that Lord Kṛṣṇa had gone, Śrī Rādhā went to Her own forest grove.

atha kṛṣṇo nadī-bhūtaṁ virajāṁ virajāmbarām sa-vigrahaṁ cakārāśu sva-vareṇa nṛpeśvara

Synonyms

atha—then; kṛṣṇaḥ—Kṛṣṇa; nadī-bhūtam—become a river; virajām—to Viurajā; virajāmbarām—dressed in splendid garments; sa-vigraham—with form; cakāra—did; āśu—at once; sva-vareṇa—by His blessing; nṛpeśvara—O king of kings.

Translation

O king of kings, then Lord Kṛṣṇa transformed Virajā from being a river to being a girl dressed in glittering garments.

punar virajayā sārdhaṁ virajā-tīraje vane nikuṣja-vṛndakāraṇye cakre rāsaṁ hariḥ svayam

Synonyms

Translation

Then Lord Kṛṣṇa again enjoyed a rāsa dance with Virajā in the forest by the Virajā river.

virajāyāṁ sapta sutā babhūvuḥ kṛṣṇa-tejasā nikuṣjaṁ te hy alaṣcakruḥ śiśavo bāla-līlayā

Synonyms

virajāyām—in Viaraj; sapta—seven; sutā—sons; babhūvuḥ—were; kṛṣṇa-tejasā—by Lord Kṛṣṇa's power; nikuṣjam—the forest; te—they; hy—indeed; alaṣcakruḥ—ornamented; śiśavaḥ—boys; bāla-līlayā—with childhood games.

Translation

By Lord's Kṛṣṇa's power seven sons were born to Virajā. With their childhood games they decorated the forest there.

ekadā taiḥ kalir abhūl laghur jyeṣṭhaiś ca tāḍitaḥ palāyamāno bhaya-bhṛn mātuḥ kroḍe jagāma ha

Synonyms

ekadā—one day; taiḥ—by them; kaliḥ— a quarrel; abhūl—was; laghuḥ—younger; jyeṣṭhaiḥ—elder; ca—and; tāḍitaḥ—hit; palāyamānaḥ—fleeing; bhaya-bhṛn—frightened; mātuḥ—of his mother; kroḍe—on the lap; jagāma—went; ha—indeed.

Translation

One day they quarreled. Hit by his elders, the youngest boy fled to his mother's lap.

tal-lālanaṁ samārebhe samāśvāsya sutaṁ satī tadā vai bhagavān sākṣāt tatraivāntaradhīyata

Synonyms

tal-lālanam—caressing; samārebhe—began; samāśvāsya—comforting; sutam—son; satī—pious lady; tadā—then; vai—indeed; bhagavān—the Lord; sākṣāt—directly; tatra—there; eva—indeed; antaradhīyata—disappeared.

Translation

As the pious lady hugged and consoled her son, Lord Kṛṣṇa suddenly disappeared.

ruṣā sutaṁ śaśāpeyaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇa-virahāturā tvaṁ jalaṁ bhava durbuddhe kṛṣṇa-viccheda-kārakaḥ

Synonyms

ruṣā—with anger; sutam—to her son; śaśāpa—cursed; iyam—she; śrī-kṛṣṇa-viraha—with separation form Śrī Kṛṣṇa; āturā—upset; tvam—you; jalam—water; bhava—become; durbuddhe—fool; kṛṣṇa-viccheda-kārakaḥ—that separated me from Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

Grieving over her separation from Kṛṣṇa, she cursed her son, "Fool that separated me from Kṛṣṇa, become water!"

kadāpi taj-jalaṁ martyā na pibantu kadācana jyeṣṭhān chaśāpa vrajata medinīṁ kali-kārakāḥ

Synonyms

kadāpi—ever; taj-jalam—thatwater; martyā—human beings; na—not; pibantu—drink; kadācana—ever; jyeṣṭhān—elder; śaśāpa—cursed; vrajata—go; medinīm—to the earth; kali-kārakāḥ—making a quarrel.

Translation

"The people will never drink your water." The older sons she cursed with the words, "Quarrelsome children, go to the earth!

jala-rūpāḥ pṛthag-yānā na sametā bhaviṣyatha naimittikaṁ ca bhavatāṁ melanaṁ syāt sadā laye

Synonyms

jala-rūpāḥ—the form of water; pṛthag-yānā—going; na—not; sametā—met; bhaviṣyatha—will be; naimittikam—regular; ca—and; bhavatām—will be; melanam—meeting; syāt—is; sadā—always; laye—in devastation.

Translation

"You will become bodies of water, each in his own place. You will not meet. Only at the time of cosmic devastation will you meet."

śrī-nārada uvāca itthaṁ te mātṛ-śāpena dharaṇīṁ vai samāgataḥ priyavrata-rathāṅgānāṁ parikhāsu samāsthitāḥ

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: In this way, by their mother's curse, they went to the earth. They lived in the ruts left by the wheels of King Priyavrata's chariot.

lavaṇekṣu-surā-sarpir- dadhi-dugdha-jalārṇavāḥ babhūvuḥ sapta te rājann akṣobhyāś ca duratyayāḥ

Synonyms

lavaṇa—salt; ikṣu—sugar cane juice; surā—liquor; sarpiḥ—ghee; dadhi—yogurt; dugdha—milk; jala—and fresh-water; arṇavāḥ—oceans; babhūvuḥ—became; sapta—seven; te—they; rājann—O king; akṣobhyāḥ—undisturbed; ca—and; duratyayāḥ—difficult to cross.

Translation

The seven boys became seven peaceful and impaasable oceans of salt-water, sugarcane juice, liquor, ghee, yogurt, milk, and fresh-water.

durvigahyāś ca gambhīrā āyāmaṁ lakṣa-yojanāt dvi-guṇaṁ dvi-guṇaṁ jātaṁ dvīpe dvīpe pṛthak pṛthak

durvigahyāḥ—impassable; ca—and; gambhīrā—deep; āyāmam—extent; lakṣa-yojanāt—eight-hundred-thousand miles; dvi-guṇam—doubled; dvi-guṇam—doubled; jātam—manifest; dvīpe—island; dvīpe—after island; pṛthak—one; pṛtha—after the other.

Translation

They were deep and impassable. The first ocean was a eight-hundred-thousand miles across, the next one was double that size, and each succeeding one was double the size of the one before.

atha putreṣu yāteṣu putra-snehāti-vihvalā sva-priyāṁ tāṁ virahiṇīṁ etya kṛṣṇo varaṁ dadau

Synonyms

Translation

After her sons had departed, she became filled with love for them. Then Lord Kṛṣṇa approached His beloved Virajā, who was unhappy to be separated from her sons. The Lord gave her a benediction.

kadā na te me vicchedo mayi bhīru bhaviṣyati sva-tejasā sva-putrāṇāṁ sadā rakṣāṁ kariṣyasi

Synonyms

Translation

"O frightened one, you will never be separated from Me. Still, with your own power you will always protect your sons."

Translation

O king of Videha, aware that Rādhā was suffering in His separation, Lord Kṛṣṇa went with Śrīdāmā to Her forest.

nikuṣja-dvāri samprāptaṁ sa-sakhaṁ prāṇa-vallabham vīkṣya mānavatī bhūtvā rādhā prāha hariṁ vacaḥ

Translation

Seeing that Kṛṣṇa, who is more to hear than Her own life, had come with His friend to to door of Her forest grove, Rādhā became filled with jealous anger. She spoke the following words to Lord Kṛṣṇa.

śrī-rādhovāca tatraiva gaccha yatrābhūt snehas te nutano hare nadī-bhūtā hi virajā nado bhavitum arhasi kuru vāsaṁ tan-nikuṣje mayā te kiṁ prayojanam

Śrī Rādhā said: O Kṛṣṇa, go where Your love is. Virajā has become a river. You become a river also. Why would You want to stay with Me in this forest?

Śrī Nārada said: Hearing these words, Lord Kṛṣṇa went to Virajā's forest. Then Kṛṣṇa's friend Śrīdāmā angrily spoke to Rādhā.

Śrī Śrīdāmā said: Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the master of countless universes. He is the master of Goloka.

tvādṛśiḥ koṭiśaḥ śaktiḥ kartuṁ śaktaḥ parāt paraḥ na vinindasi rādhe tvaṁ mānaṁ mā kuru mā kuru

Synonyms

tvādṛśiḥ—of Him; koṭiśaḥ—many millions; śaktiḥ—potencies; kartum—to do; śaktaḥ—able; parāt—than the greatest; paraḥ—greater; na—not; vinindasi—You criticize; rādhe—O Rādhā; tvam—You; mānam—jealous anger; mā—don't; kuru—do; mā—don't; kuru—do.

Translation

He has many millions of transcendental potencies. He can do whatever He likes. He is greater than the greatest. O Rādhā, please don't, don't criticize Him.

śrī-rādhovāca he mūḍha pitaraṁ stutvā mātaraṁ māṁ vinindasi rakṣaso bhava durbuddhe golokāc ca bahir bhava

Translation

Śrī Rādhā said: O fool, you praise your father and criticize Me, your mother. Fool, leave Goloka and become a demon!

Translation

śata-varṣaṁ te viyogo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ śrī-śrīdāmā uvāca—Śrī Śrīdama said; anukūlena—favorable; kṛṣṇena—by Kṛṣṇa; jātam—born; mānam—jealous anger; śubhe—O beautiful one; tava—of You; tasmāt—therefore; bhuvi—on the earth; parāt—supreme; kṛṣṇāt—from Kṛṣṇa; paripūrṇatamāt prabhoḥ—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; śata-varṣam—for a hundred years; te—of You; viyogaḥ—separation; bhaviṣyati—will be; na—no; saṁśayaḥ—doubt. Śrī Śrīdāmā said: O beautiful one, even though Lord Kṛṣṇa was kind to You, still You were angry and jealous. Therefore You will go to the earth and for a hundred years be separated from Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead. Of this there is no doubt.

Śrī Nārada said: When they had thus cursed each other they became anxious and frightened. At that moment the Lord appeared there.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Rādhā, I have the power to negate My own words and throw them far away, but I do not have the power to negate and throw away the words of My devotees.

mā śocaṁ kuru kalyāṇi varaṁ me śṛṇu rādhike māsaṁ māsaṁ viyogānte darśanaṁ me bhaviṣyati

Translation

O beautiful one, don't lament. O Rādhā, please hear the blessing I give to You: After many months, when the period of Our separation is over, You will see Me again.

bhuvo bhārāvatārāya kalpe vārāha-samjṣake bhaktānāṁ darśanaṁ dātuṁ gamiṣyāmi tvayā saha

Translation

At the time of the Varāha-kalpa, I will go with You to the earth to relieve the earth's burden and allow the devotees to see Me.

Translation

O Śrīdāmā, hear My words. By a partial expansion of yourself you will become a demon. During the Vaivasvata-manvantara you will fight with Me.

mad-dhastena ca te mṛtyur bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ punaḥ sva-vigrahaṁ pūrvaṁ prāpsyasi tvaṁ varān mama

Translation

You will then die by My hand. Of this there is no doubt. By My blessings You will again attain the form you had before.

Translation

He was named Śaṅkhacūḍa and he became a follower of Kuvera. O king of Videha that is why the spark of light from Śaṅkhacūḍa entered the body of Śrīdāmā.

svātmāramo līlayā sarva-kāryaṁ svasmin dhāmni hy advitīyaḥ karoti yaḥ sarveśaḥ sarva-rūpo mahātmā citraṁ nedaṁ naumi kṛṣṇāya tasmāi

Translation

I glorify Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is one without a second, for whom nothing is surprising, who has the power to assume any form, who is self-satisfied, who enjoys transcendental pastimes, and who stays in His own abode.

idaṁ mayā te kathitaṁ manoharaṁ vaideha vṛndāvana-khaṇḍam agrataḥ śṛṇoti caitac caritaṁ naro varaḥ paraṁ padaṁ puṇyatamaṁ prayāti saḥ

Translation

O king of Videha, thus I have spoken to you the beautiful Vṛndāvana-khaṇḍa. A person who hears these pastimes attains the most pure and sacred supreme transcendental abode.
