athānyac chṛṇu rājendra
śrī-kṛṣṇasya mahātmanaḥ
kaumāre krīḍanaṁ cedaṁ
paugaṇḍe kīrtanaṁ yathā

Synonyms

Translation

O king of kings, please listen as I describe other pastimes Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, enjoyed in His kaumara and paugaṇḍa years.

śrī-kṛṣṇo 'gha-mukhān mṛtyo
rakṣitvā vatsa-vatsapān
yamunā-pulinaṁ gatvā
prāhedaṁ harṣa-vardhanam

Synonyms

śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; agha-mukhāt from Agha's mouth ; mṛtyaḥ from death ; rakṣitvā saving ; vatsa the calves ; vatsapān and the calfherd-boys ; yamunā-pulinam to the shore of the Yamunā ; gatvā going ; prāha said ; idam this ; harṣa joy ; vardhanam *increasing.

Translation

After rescuing the calves and gopas from death in Aghāsura's mouth, Śrī Kṛṣṇa went to the Yamunā's shore and spoke the following delightful words:

aho 'ti-ramyaṁ pulinaṁ
priyaṁ komala-vālukam
śarat-praphulla-padmānāṁ
parāgaiḥ paripūritam
vāyunā tri-vidhākhyena
sugandhena sugandhitam
madhupa-dhvani-samyuktaṁ
kuñja-druma-latākulam
atropaviśya gopālā
dinaika-prahare gate
bhojanasyāpi samayaṁ
tasmāt kuruta bhojanam

Translation

O gopas, let us go to this beautiful and pleasing riverbank of soft sands, which is flooded with pollen from the lotuses blossoming in autumn, fragrant with a breeze carrying three scents, and filled with trees, vines, and the humming of bees, and, now that three hours have passed and it is time for lunch, let us take our lunch here.

atra bhojana-yogyā bhūr
dṛśyate mṛdu-vālukā
vatsakāḥ salilaṁ pitvā
te cariṣyanti śādvalam

Synonyms

atra here ; bhojana-yogya suitable for lunch ; bhūḥ place ; dṛśyate was seen ; mṛdu soft ; vālukā sands ; vatsakāḥ the calves ; salilam water ; pitvā drinking ; te they ; cariṣyanti will go ; śādvalam *to the new grasses.

Translation

I see that this place with soft sands is a very good place for our lunch. The calves will drink the water here, and then they will go to the new grasses there.

iti kṛṣṇa-vacaḥ śrutvā
tathety āhuś ca bālakāḥ
prakartuṁ bhojanaṁ sarve
hy upaviṣṭāḥ sarit-taṭe

Synonyms

Translation

Hearing Kṛṣṇa's words, the boys said, "So be it." They all sat down on the riverbank to take lunch.

atha kecid bālakāś ca
yeṣāṁ pārśve na bhojanam
te tu kṛṣṇasya karṇānte
jagadur dīnayā girā

Synonyms

Some boys, who had not brought lunch, whispered in Kṛṣṇa's ear:

Verse text

vayaṁ tu kiṁ kariṣyāmo
'smāt pārśve na tu bhojanam
nanda-grāmaṁ tu dūraṁ hi
gacchāmo vatsakair vayaṁ

Synonyms

vayam we ; tu indeed ; kim what ; kariṣyāmaḥ will do ; asmāt of us ; pārśve on the side ; na not ; tu indeed ; bhojanam lunch ; nanda of Nanda ; grāmam the village ; tu indeed ; dūram far away ; hi indeed ; gacchāmaḥ we go ; vatsakaiḥ with the calves ; vayam *we.

Translation

We did not bring any lunch. With the calves we have come very far from Nanda's village.

Verse text

iti śrutvā hariḥ prāha
mā śokaṁ kuruta priyāḥ
ahaṁ dāsyāmi sarveṣāṁ
prayatnenāpi bhojanam
tasmān mad-vākya-niratāḥ
sarve bhavata bālakāḥ
Hearing this, Kṛṣṇa said: Dear friends, don't lament. I will carefully give lunch to everyone. All you boys just follow My words.

Translation

On Kṛṣṇa's word all the boys assembled around Kṛṣṇa, put down their gopa-ropes, and ate their lunch in Kṛṣṇa's company.

cakāra kṛṣṇaḥ kila rāja-maṇḍalīṁ
gopāla-bālaiḥ purataḥ prapūritaiḥ
aneka-varṇair vasanaiḥ prakalpitair
madhye sthito pīta-paṭena bhūṣitāḥ

Synonyms

cakāra made ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; kila indeed ; rāja-maṇḍalīm a royal circle ; gopāla-bālaiḥ with gopa boys ; purataḥ in the presence ; prapūritaiḥ filled ; aneka-varṇaiḥ with many different kinds ; vasanaiḥ with garments ; prakalpitaiḥ made ; madhye in the middle ; sthitaḥ situated ; pīta-paṭena with a yellow garment ; bhūṣitāḥ *decorated.

Translation

With the gopa boys dressed in garments of many colors, Kṛṣṇa made a royal circle, with Himself, dressed in yellow, in the center.

reje tataḥ so vara-gopa-dārakair
yathāmareśo hy amaraiś ca sarvataḥ
punar yathāmbhoruha-komalair dalair
madhye tu vaideha suvarṇa-karṇikā

Synonyms

Translation

O king of Videha, surrounded by the gopa boys as Indra is surrounded by the demigods or a lotus whorl is surrounded by many soft petals, Kṛṣṇa shone with great splendor.

kusumair aṅkuraiḥ kecit
pallavaiś ca dalaiḥ phalaiḥ
hastair dṛśadbhiḥ śigbhiś ca
jakṣus te kṛta-bhājanāḥ

Synonyms

kusumaiḥ with flowers ; aṅkuraiḥ with grass ; kecit some ; pallavaiḥ with twigs ; ca and ; dalaiḥ with leaves ; phalaiḥ with fruits ; hastaiḥ with hands ; dṛśadbhiḥ with stones ; śigbhiḥ with rope ; ca and ; jakṣuḥ ate ; te they ; kṛta having made ; bhājanāḥ *dishes.

Translation

Making lunch-trays out of flowers, grass, twigs, leaves, fruit, rocks, rope, or their hands, the boys ate.

Verse text

tatraiko bālakāḥ śīghraṁ
kṛṣṇāya kavalaṁ dadau
kṛṣṇas tu kavalaṁ bhuktvā
sarvān paśyann idaṁ jagau

Synonyms

Translation

Then one boy suddenly gave a morsel to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa ate it, glanced at everyone, and said:

anyān nidarśayan svādu
nāhaṁ jānāmi vai sakhe
tathety uktvā sa bālāś ca
nītvānyān kavalān dadau

Synonyms

anyān the others ; nidarśayan showing ; svādu delicious ; na not ; aham I ; jānāmi know ; vai indeed ; sakhe O friend ; tathā so be it ; iti thus ; uktvā saying ; sa He ; bālaḥ the boy ; ca and ; nītvā bringing ; anyān others ; kavalān morsels ; dadau *gave.

Translation

Showing the others, Kṛṣṇa said: Friend, I do not know of anything more delicious than this. The boy said: It is so. Then the boy gave morsels of that food to the others.

Verse text

bhuktvā te kathayām āsuḥ
prahasantaḥ parasparam
punas tatrāpi subalo
haraye kavalaṁ dadau

Synonyms

bhuktvā eating ; te they ; kathayām āsuḥ said ; prahasantaḥ laughing ; parasparam among themselves ; punaḥ again ; tatra there ; api also ; subalaḥ Subala ; haraye to Kṛṣṇa ; kavalam amorsel ; dadau *gave.

Translation

Joking and laughing, the boys ate. Then Subala gave a morsel of food to Kṛṣṇa.

Verse text

kṛṣṇas tu kavalaṁ kiñcid
bhuktvā tatra jahāsa ha
ye bhukta-kavalā bālās
te sarve jahasuḥ sphuṭam

Synonyms

kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; tu indeed ; kavalam the morsel ; kiñcit a little bit ; bhuktvā eating ; tatra there ; jahāsa laughed ; ha Ah! ; ye who ; bhukta eating ; kavalaḥ the morsel ; bālāḥ the boys ; te they ; sarve all ; jahasuḥ laughed ; sphuṭam *aloud.

Translation

Kṛṣṇa tasted the morsel and laughed. All the boys that tasted that food laughed aloud.

Verse text

śrī-bāla ūcuḥ
yasya mātāmahā mūḍhā
śṛṇu nanda-kumāraka
na jṣānaṁ bhojane tasya
tasmāt svādu na vidyate

Synonyms

śrī-bālaḥ ūcuḥ the boys said ; yasya of whom ; mātāmahā the grandmother ; mūḍhā bewildered ; śṛṇu listen ; nanda of Nanda ; kumāraka O son ; na not ; jṣānam knowledge ; bhojane in eating ; tasya of him ; tasmāt therefore ; svādu delicious ; na not ; vidyate *is.

Translation

The boys said: O son of Nanda, his bewildered grandmother does not know how to cook. That was not delicious.

Verse text

tato dadau ca kavalaṁ
śrīdāmā mādhavāya ca
anyān sarvān bahu-śreṣṭhaṁ
jaguḥ sarve vrajārbhakāḥ

Synonyms

tataḥ then ; dadau gave ; ca and ; kavalam a morsel ; śrīdāmā Śrīdāmā ; mādhavāya to Kṛṣṇa ; ca and ; anyān the others ; sarvān all ; bahu-śreṣṭham the best ; jaguḥ said ; sarve all ; vraja of Vraja ; arbhakāḥ *the boys.

Translation

Then Śrīdāmā gave a morsel to Kṛṣṇa and the other boys. All the boys of Vraja declared, "This is the best."

punaḥ kṛṣṇāya pradadau
kavalaṁ ca varūthapaḥ
anyān bālāṁs tathā sarvān
kiñcit kiñcit prayatnataḥ

Synonyms

punaḥ again ; kṛṣṇāya to Kṛṣṇa ; pradadau gave ; kavalam a morsel ; ca and ; varūthapaḥ varūthapa ; anyān to the other ; bālān boys ; tathā then ; sarvān all ; kiñcit something ; kiñcit something ; prayatnataḥ *carefully.

Translation

Then Varūthapa earnestly gave a morsel to Kṛṣṇa and all the other boys.

Verse text

bhuktvā tu jahasuḥ sarve
śrī-kṛṣṇādyā vrajārbhakāḥ
śrī-bāla ūcuḥ
tādṛśaṁ bhojanaṁ cāsya
yādṛśaṁ subalasya vai

Synonyms

bhuktvā eating ; tu indeed ; jahasuḥ laughed ; sarve all ; śrī-kṛṣṇādyā headed by Kṛṣṇa ; vrajārbhakāḥ the boys of Vraja ; śrī-bālāḥ ūcuḥ the boys said ; tādṛśam like that ; bhojanam food ; ca and ; asya of him ; yādṛśam like which ; subalasya of Subala ; vai *indeed.

Translation

When they ate it, Kṛṣṇa and all the boys of Vraja laughed. The boys said, "This is like Subala's food.

Verse text

bhuktvāty-udvigna-manasaḥ
sarve vayam ataḥ kila
evaṁ pṛthak pṛthak sarve
darśayantaḥ sva-bhojanam

Synonyms

bhuktvā eating ; aty-udvigna-manasaḥ very unhappy at heart ; sarve all ; vayam we ; ataḥ therefore ; kila indeed ; evam thus ; pṛthak pṛthak individually ; sarve all ; darśayantaḥ showing ; sva-bhojanam *own lunch.

Translation

"by eating this we have all become very unhappy at heart." In this way each boy showed his lunch to the others.

hāsayanto hasantaś ca
cakruḥ krīḍāṁ parasparam
jaṭharasya paṭe veṇuṁ
vetraṁ śṛṅgaṁ ca kakṣake

Synonyms

hāsayantaḥ making others laugh ; hasantaḥ laughing ; ca and ; cakruḥ did ; krīḍām pastimes ; parasparam together ; jaṭharasya of the abdomen ; paṭe in the cloth ; veṇum flute ; vetram stick ; śṛṅgam horn ; ca and ; kakṣake *in the hiding place.

Translation

Laughing and making each other laugh, the boys enjoyed pastimes. Tucked into the cloth about His waist His flute, stick, and horn, . . .

vāme pāṇau ca kavalaṁ
hy aṅguliṣu phalāni ca
śirasā mukuṭaṁ bibhrat
skandhe pīta-paṭaṁ tathā

Synonyms

vāme in the left ; pāṇau hand ; ca and ; kavalam a morsel of food ; hi indeed ; aṅguliṣu in the fingers ; phalāni fruits ; ca and ; śirasā by the head ; mukuṭam a crown ; bibhrat holding ; skandhe on the shoulders ; pīta-paṭam yellow garments ; tathā *so.

Translation

. . . in His left hand a morsel of food, on His fingers pieces of fruit, on His head a crown, over His shoulder a yellow cloth, . . .

Verse text

hṛdaye vana-mālāṁ ca
kaṭau kāñcīṁ tathaiva ca
pādayor nūpurau bibhrac
chrīvatsaṁ kaustubhaṁ hṛdi

Translation

. . . on His chest a forest garland, on His hips a belt, on His feet anklets, on His chest a Kaustubha jewel and Śrīvatsa mark, . . .

Verse text

tiṣṭhan madhye gopa-goṣṭhyāṁ
hāsayan narmabhiḥ svakaiḥ
svarge loke ca miṣati
bubhuje yajṣa-bhug ghariḥ

Synonyms

tiṣṭhan situated ; madhye in the center ; gopa-goṣṭhyām of the gopas ; hāsayan making laugh ; narmabhiḥ with jokes ; svakaiḥ own ; svarge on Svargaloka ; loke on the other planets ; ca and ; miṣati gazing ; bubhuje enjoyed ; yajṣa-bhuk the enjoyer of sacrifices ; hariḥ *Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

. . . staying in the midst of the gopas and making them laugh with His joking words as the people of Svargaloka and the other planets gazed with wonder, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the enjoyer of sacrifices, enjoyed many pastimes.

Verse text

evaṁ kṛṣṇātma-natheṣu
bhuñjaneṣv arbhakeṣu ca
viviśur gahvare dūraṁ
tṛṇa-lobhena vatsakāḥ

Synonyms

evam thus ; kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa ; ātma own ; natheṣu Lord ; bhuñjaneṣu eating ; arbhakeṣu among the boys ; ca and ; viviśuḥ entered ; gahvare the deep forest ; dūram far away ; tṛṇa-lobhena eager for grass ; vatsakāḥ *the calves.

Translation

As the boys, for whom Kṛṣṇa was the Lord of their lives, ate, the calves, greedy for more grass, went far away, deep in the forest.

Verse text

vilokya tān bhaya-trastān
gopān kṛṣṇa uvāca ha
yūyaṁ gacchantu māhaṁ tu
hy āneṣye vatsakān iha

Synonyms

vilokya seeing ; tān them ; bhaya-trastān frightened ; gopān teh gopas ; kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa ; uvāca said ; ha O ; yūyam you ; don't ; aham I ; tu indeed ; hi indeed ; āneṣye will bring ; vatsakān the calves ; iha *here.

Translation

Seeing that the gopas were frightened, Kṛṣṇa said to them, "Don't go. I shall bring the calves here."

Verse text

ity uktvā kṛṣṇa utthāya
gṛhitvā kavalaṁ kare
vicikāya darī-kuñja-
gahvare vatsakān svakān

Synonyms

iti thus ; uktvā saying ; kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa ; utthāya rising ; gṛhitvā taking ; kavalam a morsel of food ; kare in His hand ; vicikāya to search ; kuñja-gahvare and forest groves ; vatsakān the calves ; svakān *own.

Translation

Saying this, Kṛṣṇa stood up, took a morsel of food in His hand, and left to search the caves and forests for the calves.

Verse text

tadaiva cāmbhoja-bhavaḥ samāgato
vilokya muktiṁ hy agha-rākṣasasya ca
dadarśa kṛṣṇaṁ puline yathā-ruci
bhuñjānam annaṁ vraja-bālakaiḥ saha

Synonyms

Translation

Then the demigod Brahmā, who had already seen the liberation of Aghāsura, came and gazed at Kṛṣṇa happily eating lunch with the boys on the riverbank.

Verse text

dṛṣṭvā ca kṛṣṇaṁ manasā sa ūce
tv ayaṁ hi gopo na hi deva-devaḥ
harir yadi syād bahu-kutsitānne
kathaṁ rato vā vraja-gopa-bālaiḥ

Translation

As he gazed at Kṛṣṇa, Brahmā said in his mind, "This must be a gopa. He cannot be Lord Hari, the Personality of Godhead. Why would Lord Hari enjoy such wretched food with the gopa boys of Vraja?"

ity uktvā mohito brahmā
māyayā paramātmanaḥ
draṣṭuṁ mañju mahattvaṁ tu
manaś cakre hy aho nṛpa

Synonyms

Translation

After speaking these words, Brahmā became bewildered by the Lord's illusory potency. O king, he set his heart on seeing the beautiful glories of the Lord.

sarvān vastān ito gopān
nītvā khe 'vasthitaḥ purā
antardadhe vismito 'jo
dṛṣṭvāghāsura-mokṣaṇam

Synonyms

Translation

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Not seeing the calves, returning to the riverbank and not seeing the gopas, and then searching in the forest for them both, Kṛṣṇa thought, "This must be Brahmā's work."

Whatever were the gopas' and calves' forms, with their hands, feet, and other parts, whatever were their sticks, horns, and other possessions, whatever were their characters, qualities, and other features, and whatever were their clothes, ornaments, and other things, Lord Kṛṣṇa perfectly copied. In this way He proved the Vedic statement: "sarvaṁ viṣṇumayaṁ viśvam" (The entire universe is Lord Viṣṇu).

Translation

What happened to Brahmā, the master of the universe, after he stole the gopas? The creator Brahmā became like a firefly standing before the sun of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

stuvatāṁ namatāṁ samam
tad-dayādṛṣṭa-dṛṣṭānāṁ

Translation

nandasyāpi putratām āgataḥ kau

sphurat-kaustubhaṁ śyāmalaṁ pīta-vastram

taṁ kṛṣṇaṁ bhaja harim ādi-devam asmin
kṣetra-jṣaṁ kham iva vilipta-megham eva

saṅkalpa eva tu vikalpaka eva tāvat
tābhyāṁ bhaven manasijas tv abhimāna-yogas

O wise one, when the mind is influenced by passion it accepts the materially pleasant and rejects the materially unpleasant. By these two actions material desires and arrogant pride breed in the heart. In this way the intelligence is gradually disfigured.

Translation

Like a fleeting lightning flash, a ripple on the water, the passing seasons, and the false, blurred line of a moving spark, the face, filled with sufferings, of the material world is temporary and untrue. The whirl of sense happiness is the seeming-stationary circle of a quickly-moving spark.

vṛkṣā jalena calatāpi calā ivātra
netreṇa bhūri-calitena caleva bhūś ca
evaṁ guṇaiḥ prakṛti-jair bhramato jana-sthaṁ

Translation

When water moves, the trees reflected on it seem to move also. When the eyes are tossed to and fro, the earth seems to move. O Kṛṣṇa, bewildered by the modes of material nature, the people say material sense pleasures are real.

duḥkhaṁ sukhaṁ ca manasā prabhavaṁ ca supte
mithyā bhavet punar aho bhuvi jāgare 'sya
itthaṁ viveka-ghaṭitasya janasya sarvaṁ

bhakto bhajed aja-patiṁ hṛdi vāsudevaṁ
nirdhūma-vahnir iva mukta-guṇa-sva-bhāvaḥ
paśyan ghaṭeṣu sa-jaleṣu yathendum ekaṁ
etādṛśaḥ paramahaṁsa-varaḥ kṛtārthaḥ

A devotee like a smokeless flame free from the touch of the material modes, who worships Lord Vāsudeva in his heart and sees the one Lord Vāsudeva present in everyone's heart as one moon is reflected in many pots of water, is perfect, the best of swanlike saints.

stuvanti vedāḥ satataṁ ca yaṁ sadā
harer mahimnaḥ kila ṣoḍaśīṁ kalām
kadāpi jānanti na te tri-loke

Translation

Ananta praises Him with a thousand mouths, Śiva with five mouths and I with four mouths. We serve Lord Hari.

kṣudra-ghaṇṭikayānvitam

On Lord Kṛṣṇa's chest I worship Bhṛgu Muni's footprint, Lakṣmī-devi's home, the mark of Śrīvatsa, the splendid golden nikaṣa line, and, suspended from His neck, the many necklaces of diamonds, gold, jewels, and pearls splendid as glistening stars, and the many flower garlands filled with buzzing bees.

sindūra-varṇam ati-kīcakarāva-līlām

grīvākṛtau kandhara ucca-deśe

yad-dvāri deśe na gatir guhendra-
gaṇeśa-tāreśa-divākarāṇām
ājṣāṁ vinā yānti na kuñja-maṇḍalaṁ

I worship Kṛṣṇacandra, the master of the universes. Kārttikeya, Indra, Gaṇeśa, Candra, and Sūrya cannot enter the door to His realm. Without His permission no one can enter the circle of His forest.

Translation

They who are not devoted to You but instead are earnestly engaged in impersonal speculation gain only trouble for all their efforts. They are like a farmers that thresh empty husks.

yogino munayaś caiva

Love is created in two ways: by hearing and by seeing. O Lord Hari, bewildered by Your illusory potency, I have not attained love for You.

ity uktvāśru-mukho bhūtvā
natvā tat-pāda-paṅkajau
punar āha vidhiḥ kṛṣṇaṁ
bhaktyā sarvaṁ kṣamāpayan

Synonyms

ity thus ; uktvā speaking ; aśru tears ; mukhaḥ on his face ; bhūtvā becoming ; natvā bowing down ; tat-pāda-paṅkajau to His lotus feet ; punaḥ again ; āha spoke ; vidhiḥ Brahmā ; kṛṣṇam to Kṛṣṇa ; bhaktyā with devotion ; sarvam all ; kṣamāpayan *appealing for forgiveness.

Translation

Speaking these words, bowing before Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, and tears gliding down his face, Brahmā earnestly begged for forgiveness.

Verse text

ghoṣeṣu vāsinām eṣāṁ
bhūtvāhaṁ tvat-padāmbujam
yadā bhajeyaṁ su-gatis
tadā bhūyān na cānyathā

Synonyms

ghoṣeṣu in the cowherd villages ; vāsinām of the residents ; eṣām of them ; bhūtvā becoming ; aham I ; tvat-padāmbujam Your lotus feet ; yadā when ; bhajeyam I worship ; su-gatiḥ an auspicious condition ; tadā then ; bhūyān will be ; na not ; ca and ; anyathā *otherwise.

Translation

When I take birth among the residents of these cowherd villages, and when I worship Your lotus feet, then I will attain auspiciousness. Nothing else will be auspicious for me.

Verse text

vayaṁ tu gopa-deśeṣu
saṁsthitāś ca śivādayaḥ
sakṛt kṛṣṇaṁ tu paśyantas
tasmād dhanyāś ca bhārate

Translation

When we demigods, who have Śiva as our leader, enter the lands of the gopas and once gaze on Lord Kṛṣṇa, then we will be fortunate.

aho bhāgyaṁ tu śrī-kṛṣṇa
mātā-pitros tava prabho
tathā ca gopa-gopīnāṁ
pūrṇas tvaṁ dṛśyate vraje

muktā-hāraḥ sarva-viśvopakaraḥ
sarvādhāraḥ pātu māṁ viśva-kāraḥ
līlāgāraḥ śūri-kanyā-vihāraḥ
krīḍāpāraḥ kṛṣṇacandrāvatāraḥ

Translation

May Lord Kṛṣṇa, who wears a pearl necklace, in whom everything rests, who creates and maintains all the universes, and who, enjoying by the Yamunā, is the playful abode of transcendental pastimes, protect me.

śrī-kṛṣṇa vṛṣṇi-kula-puṣkara nanda-putra
rādhā-pate madana-mohana deva-deva
sammohitaṁ vraja-pate bhuvi te 'jāya māṁ
govinda gokula-pate paripāhi pāhi

O Śrī Kṛṣṇa, O lotus growing in King Vṛṣṇi's family, O son of Nanda, O Lord of Rādhā, O enchanter of Kāmadeva, O master of the demigods, O king of Vraja, O king of Gokula, O Govinda, please protect, please protect me, who am now bewildered by Your illusory potency!

karoti yaḥ kṛṣṇa-hareḥ pradakṣiṇaṁ
bhavej jagat-tīrtha-phalaṁ ca tasya tu
te kṛṣṇalokaṁ sukhadaṁ parāt paraṁ
goloka-lokaṁ pravaraṁ gamiṣyati

Translation

A person who circumambulates Lord Kṛṣṇa attains the result of visiting all the holy places in the universe. He will go to Your Kṛṣṇaloka, the best of spiritual realms.

śrī-nārada uvāca
ity abhiṣṭūya govindaṁ
śrīmad-vṛndāvaneśvaram
natvā tri-vāraṁ lokeśas
cakāra tu pradakṣiṇam

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: After offering these prayers and bowing down, three times Brahmā circumambulated Lord Govinda, the glorious master of Vṛndāvana.

tatra cālakṣito bhūtvā
vatsān bālān pitāmahaḥ
varaṁ dattvā prayānārthaṁ
yacanaṁ sa cakāra ha

Translation

First becoming invisible, and then offerings blessing to the calves and boys, grandfather Brahmā asked permission to leave.

punaḥ praṇamya svaṁ lokaṁ
ātma-bhūḥ pratyapadyata

With a glance Kṛṣṇa gave His permission. Then Brahmā bowed again and returned to his own world.

yatrāpi puline rājan
gopānāṁ rāja-maṇḍalī

Translation

O king, then Kṛṣṇa quickly led the calves from the forest to the Yamunā's shore, where Kṛṣṇa was in the midst of a glorious circle of gopas.

vatsaiḥ sārdhaṁ samāgatam
kṣaṇārdhaṁ menire vīkṣya
kṛṣṇa-māyā-vimohitāḥ

Translation

Bewildered by Kṛṣṇa's yogamāyā potency, when they saw Kṛṣṇa with the calves, the gopa boys thought He had been gone for only half a moment.

ta ūcur vatsakaiḥ kṛṣṇa
tvaraṁ tvaṁ tu samāgataḥ
kuruṣva bhojanaṁ cātra
kenāpi na kṛtaṁ prabho

'bhyavahṛtyārbhakaiḥ saha
darśayām āsa sarvebhyas
carmājagaram eva ca

Translation

Laughing, Kṛṣṇa took lunch with the boys. Then He showed them the skin of the dead snake Aghāsura.

sāyam-kāle sa-rāmas tu
kṛṣṇo gopaiḥ parāvṛtaḥ
agre kṛtvā vatsa-vṛndaṁ
hy ājagāma śanair vrajam

Translation

Then Kṛṣṇa, placing the calves in front and accompanied by Balarāma and the gopas, slowly returned to the village of Vraja in the evening.

go-vatsakaiḥ sita-sitāsita-pīta-varṇai
raktādi-dhūmra-haritair bahu-śīla-rūpaiḥ
gopāla-maṇḍala-gataṁ vraja-pāla-putraṁ
vande vanāt sukhada-goṣṭhakam āvrajantam

Translation

As, encircled by gopas and by calves of many different forms and natures and of many colors beginning with white, black, yellow, red, green, and smokey, He returns from the forest to the blissful village of gopas, I bow down before Lord Kṛṣṇa, the prince of Vraja.

ānando gopikānāṁ tu
hy āsīt kṛṣṇasya darśane
yāsāṁ yena vinā rājan
kṣaṇo yuga-samo 'bhavat

Translation

When they saw Kṛṣṇa, the gopīs became filled with bliss. O king, for them a moment's separation from Him seemed like a yuga.

kṛtvā goṣṭhe pṛthag vatsān
bālāḥ svaṁ svaṁ gṛhān gatāḥ
jaguś cāghāsura-vādhaṁ
ātmano rakṣaṇaṁ hareḥ

Translation

After placing the calves in their barns, the boys went to their own homes. There they told how Kṛṣṇa killed Aghāsura and saved them.
