मुहु: परिधयोऽभूवन् सराह्वो: शशिसूर्ययो: । निर्घाता रथनिर्ह्रादा विवरेभ्य: प्रजज्ञिरे ॥ ८ ॥

muhuḥ paridhayo ’bhūvan sarāhvoḥ śaśi-sūryayoḥ nirghātā ratha-nirhrādā vivarebhyaḥ prajajṣire

Synonyms

muhuḥ again and again ; paridhayaḥ misty halos ; abhūvan appeared ; sa rāhvoḥ — during eclipses ; śaśi of the moon ; sūryayoḥ of the sun ; nirghātāḥ claps of thunder ; ratha nirhrādāḥ — sounds like those of rattling chariots ; vivarebhyaḥ from the mountain caves ; prajajṣire were produced .

Translation

Misty halos appeared around the sun and the moon during solar and lunar eclipses again and again. Claps of thunder were heard even without clouds, and sounds like those of rattling chariots emerged from the mountain caves.

There were many eclipses of the sun and moon with halos. There was thunder without clouds and from mountain caves arose sounds of chariots. Nirghātā means thunder without clouds. Sounds like chariots (ratha-nirhrāda) arose from mountain caves (vivarebhyaḥ).
