śrī-nārada uvāca
vraje śoṇapurādhiśo
gopo nando dhanī mahān
bhāryāḥ pañca sahasrāṇi
babhūvus tasya maithila

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; vraje in Vraja ; śoṇapurādhiśaḥ the king of Sonapura ; gopaḥ a gopa ; nandaḥ Nanda ; dhanī wealthy ; mahān exalted ; bhāryāḥ wives ; pañca sahasrāṇi five thousand ; babhūvuḥ were ; tasya of him ; maithila O king of Mithilā.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: O king of Mithilā, in Vraja lived a righteous and wealthy gopa named Nanda, who had been the king of Śoṇapura. He had five thousand wives.

jātā matsya-varāt tās tu
samudre gopa-kanyakāḥ
tathānyāś ca vicitrāḥ
pṛthivyā dohanān nṛpa

Synonyms

jātā born ; matsya-varāt by the blessings of Lord Matsya ; tāḥ they ; tu indeed ; samudre in the ocean ; gopa-kanyakāḥ gopīs ; tathā so ; anyāḥ others ; ca and ; api also ; pṛthivyā of the earth ; dohanāt from the milking ; nṛpa O king.

Translation

He had many daughters. Some had previously been born from the milk-ocean and had been the goddess of fortune's friends, and now were born as gopīs by Lord Matsya's benediction, and others had been the plants the sprouted when the earth was milked.

barhiṣmatī-pur-andhryo yā
jātā jāti-smarāḥ parāḥ
tathānyāpsaraso 'bhūvan
varān nārāyaṇasya ca

Synonyms

barhiṣmatī-pur-andhryaḥ the girls of Bharismati-pura ; who ; jātā born ; jāti-smarāḥ remembering their previous birth ; parāḥ others ; tathā so ; anyā others ; apsarasaḥ apsaras ; abhūvan becasme ; varān by the benediction ; nārāyaṇasya of Lord Nārāyaṇa ; ca and.

Translation

Some had been the women of Barhiṣmatī-pura. They remembered their previous birth. Others had been apsarās and became gopī by the blessings of Nārāyaṇa Ṛṣi

tathā sutala-vāsinyo
vāmanasya varāt striyaḥ
tathā nāgendra-kanyāś ca
jātāḥ śeṣa-varāt parāt

Synonyms

tathā so ; sutala-vāsinyaḥ the residents of Sutala ; vāmanasya of Lord Vāmana ; varāt by the blessing ; striyaḥ women ; tathā so ; nāgendra of the serpent-king ; kanyāḥ the daughters ; ca and ; jātāḥ born ; śeṣa-varāt by the blessing of Lord Śeṣa ; parāt great.

Translation

Some had been the women of Sutalaloka and became gopīs by the blessings of Lord Vāmana. Others had been the daughters of the king of the Nāgas and they became gopīs by the spiritual blessings of Lord Śeṣa.

tābhyo durvāsasā dattaṁ
kṛṣṇā-pañcāṅgam adbhutam
tena sampūjya yamunāṁ
vavrire śrīpatiṁ varam

Synonyms

tābhyaḥ to them ; durvāsasā by Durvasa Muni ; dattam given ; kṛṣṇa-pañcāṅgam five ways to worship Lord Kṛṣṇa ; adbhutam wonderful ; tena by that ; sampūjya worshiping ; yamunām the Yamunā ; vavrire attained ; śrīpatim Kṛṣṇa ; varam as their husband.

Translation

Durvāsā Muni gave them the wonderful kṛṣṇā-pañcāṅga method of worship. Following it, they worshiped the Yamunā and attained Lord Kṛṣṇa as their husband.

yamunā-nikaṭe divye
puṁs-kokila-taru-vraje

Translation

madhupa-dhvani-samyukte kūjat-kokila-sārase madhu-māse manda-vāyau vasanta-latikāvṛte dolotsavaṁ samārebhe harir madana-mohanaḥ kadamba-vrkṣe rahasi kalpa-vrkṣe manohare ekadā—once; śrī-hariḥ—Śrī Kṛṣṇa; tābhiḥ—with them; vṛndāraṇye—in Vṛndāvana forest; manohare—beautiful; yamunā-nikaṭe—by the Yamunā shore; divye—splendid; puṁs-kokila-taru-vraje—among trees filled with cuckoos; madhupa-dhvani-samyukte—filled with the humming of bees; kūjat—warbling; kokila—cuckoos; sārase—and cranes; madhu-māse—in the month of Madhu; manda-vāyau—with a gentle breeze; vasanta-latikāvṛte—filled with madhavi vines; dola—swing; utsavaṁfestival; samārebhe—did; hariḥ—Kṛṣṇa; madana-mohanaḥ—more charming than Kāmadeva; kadamba-vrkṣe—in a kadamba tree; rahasi—in a secluded place; kalpa-vrkṣe—in a desire tree; manohare—beautiful. Once, during the month of Caitra (March-April), Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is more charming than Kāmadeva, enjoyed a swing festival with these gopīs in a kadamba kalpa-vṛkṣa tree in a beautiful and secluded place in beautiful Vṛndāvana forest, a place filled with trees and mādhavī vines, buzzing bees, cooing cuckoos and cranes, and a gentle breeze from the nearby Yamunā.

kālindī-jala-kallola-
kolāhala-samākule
tad-dola-khelanaṁ cakrus
tā gopyaḥ prema-vihvalāḥ

Synonyms

kālindī of the Yamunā ; jala water ; kallola waves ; kolāhala uproar ; samākule filled ; tad-dola-khelanam swinging pastime ; cakruḥ did ; they ; gopyaḥ gopīs ; prema-vihvalāḥ filled with love.

Translation

As the Yamunā was filled with waves, these gopīs, deeply in love with Kṛṣṇa, enjoyed pastimes on a swing.

rādhayā kīrti-sutayā
candra-koṭi-prakāśayā
reje vṛndāvane kṛṣṇo
yathā ratyā ratīśvaraḥ

Synonyms

rādhayā with Rādhā ; kīrti-sutayā the daughter of Kīrti ; candra-koṭi-prakāśayā splendid as millions of moons ; reje shone ; vṛndāvane in Vṛndāvana forest ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; yathā as ; ratyā with Rati ; ratīśvaraḥ Kāmadeva.

Translation

As Kāmadeva shines with Rati by His side, so in Vṛndāvana forest Lord Kṛṣṇa shone with Kīrti's daughter Rādhā, who was more beautiful and glorious than millions of moons, by His side.

evaṁ prāptāś ca yāḥ sarvāḥ
śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ nanda-nandanam
paripūrṇatamaṁ sākṣāt
tāsāṁ kiṁ varṇyate tapaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

All these gopīs attained Nanda's son, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, as their lover. Who can describe the austerities they must have performed?

nāgendra-kanyā yāḥ sarvās
caitra-māse manohare
balabhadraṁ hariṁ prāptāḥ
kṛṣṇā-tīre tu tāḥ śubhāḥ

Synonyms

nāgendra-kanyā the daughters of the Naga king ; yāḥ who ; sarvāḥ all ; caitra-māse in ther month of Caiutra ; manohare beautuful ; balabhadram Balarāma ; harim Lord Hari ; prāptāḥ attained ; kṛṣṇā-tīre on the Yamunā's shore ; tu indeed ; tāḥ they ; śubhāḥ beautiful.

Translation

During the beautiful month of Caitra (March-April), by the Yamunā's shore, the beautiful gopīs that had been the daughters of the Nāga-king attained the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Balarāma, as their lover.

idaṁ mayā te kathitaṁ
gopīnāṁ caritaṁ śubham
sarva-pāpa-haraṁ puṇyaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi

Synonyms

idam this ; mayā by me ; te to you ; kathitam spoken ; gopīnām of the gs ; caritam activities ; śubham beautiful ; sarva-pāpa all sins ; puṇyaṁ sacred ; kim what? ; bhūyaḥ more ; śrotum to hear ; icchasi do you wish.

Translation

Now I have told you the beautiful and sacred story of the gopīs, a story that removes all sins. What more do you wish to hear?

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca
yamunāyāś ca pañcāṅgaṁ
dattaṁ durvāsasā mune
gopībhyo yena govindaḥ
prāptas tad brūhi māṁ prabho

Translation

Śrī Bahulāśva said: O sage, please describe to me the pañcāṅga method of worshiping the Yamunā that Durvāsā gave to the gopīs and that they followed to attain Lord Kṛṣṇa.

atraivodaharantīmaṁ
itihāsaṁ purātanam
yasya śravaṇa-mātreṇa
pāpa-hāniḥ parā bhavet

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; atra here ; eva indeed ; udaharanti describing ; imam this ; itihāsam story ; purātanam ancient ; yasya of whom ; śravaṇa-mātreṇa simply by hearing ; pāpa sins ; hāniḥ destorying ; parā great ; bhavet is.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Simply by hearing this ancient story one becomes free of all sins.

mandhātā rāja-sattamaḥ
mṛgayāṁ vicaran prāptaḥ
saubharer āśramaṁ śubham

Translation

vṛndāvane sthitaṁ sākṣāt kṛṣṇā-tīre manohare natvā jāmātaraṁ rājā saubhariṁ prāha mānadaḥ ayodhyā—of Ayodhyā; adhipatiḥ—trhe king; śrīmān—glorious; mandhātā—Mandhātā; rāja-sattamaḥ—the best of kings; mṛgayam—in hunting; vicaran—going; prāptaḥ—attained; saubhareḥ—of Saubhari Muni; āśramam—the asrama; śubham—auspicious; vṛndāvane—in Vṛndāvana; sthitam—situated; sākṣāt—directlky; kṛṣṇā-tīre—by ther Yamunā's shore; manohare—beautiful; natvā—bowing down; jāmātaram—to his son-in-law; rājā—the king; saubharim—to saubhari; prāha—said; mānadaḥ—respectful. As glorious Mandhātā, the king of Ayodhyā, was hunting, he wandered into Saubhari Muni's auspicious āśrama, which was in beautiful Vṛndāvana forest by the Yamunā's shore. Bowing down before his son-in-law, the respectful king spoke to Saurabhi.

bhagavan sarva-vit sākṣāt
tvaṁ parāvara-vittamaḥ
lokānāṁ tamaso 'ndhānāṁ
divya-sūrya ivāparaḥ

Synonyms

śrī-mandhātovāca Śrī Mandhātā said ; bhagavan O lord ; sarva-vit knowing everything ; sākṣāt directly ; tvam you ; parāvara-vittamaḥ the best of the all-knowing ; lokānām of the worlds ; tamasaḥ of the darkness ; andhānām darkened ; divya-sūrya a splendid sun ; iva like ; aparaḥ another.

Translation

Śrī Mandhātā said: O Lord, O best of the all-knowing, You are like a second sun that lights up the darkness of the worlds.

iha loke bhāved rājyaṁ
sarva-siddhi-samanvitam
amutra kṛṣṇa-sarūpyaṁ
yena syāt tad vadāśu me

Synonyms

iha in this ; loke world ; bhāvet may be ; rājyam a kinbgdom ; sarva-siddhi-samanvitam with all perfections ; amutra in the next world ; kṛṣṇa of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; sarūpyam with a form like His ; yena by which ; syāt may be ; tat that ; vada please tell ; āśu at once ; me to me.

Translation

Please tell me how in this life I may attain a great kingdom and in the next life a spiritual form like that of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

śrī-saubharir uvāca
yamunāyāś ca pañcāṅgaṁ
vadiṣyāmi tavāgrataḥ
sarva-siddhi-karaṁ śaśvat
kṛṣṇa-sārūpya-kārakam

Synonyms

śrī-saubharir uvāca Śrī Saubhari said ; yamunāyāś of the Yamunā ; ca and ; pañcāṅgam pancangam ; vadiṣyāmi I will speak ; tava agrataḥ to you ; sarva-siddhi-karam grantiung all perfection ; śaśvat always ; kṛṣṇa-sārūpya-kārakam granting a spiritual form like Lord Kṛṣṇa's.

Translation

Śrī Saubhari said: I will describe to you the pañcāṅga method of worshiping the Yamunā. This worship brings all perfection. It gives one a spiritual form like that of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

yāvat sūrya udeti sma
yāvac ca pratitiṣṭhati
tāvad rājya-pradaṁ cātra
śrī-kṛṣṇa-vaśa-kārakam

Synonyms

yāvat as long as ; sūryaḥ the sun ; udeti rises ; sma indeed ; yāvac as long as ; ca and ; pratitiṣṭhati stays ; tāvat so long ; rājya kingdom ; pradam gives ; ca and ; atra here ; śrī-kṛṣṇa Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; vaśa under control ; kārakam doing.

Translation

This worship brings one a kingdom that lasts for as long as the sun rises and shines in the sky. This worship makes Lord Kṛṣṇa into one's submissive servant.

Verse text

kavacaṁ ca stavaṁ nāmnāṁ
sahasraṁ paṭalaṁ tathā
paddhatiṁ sūrya-vaṁśendra
pañcāṅgāni vidur budhāḥ

Synonyms

kavacam armor ; ca and ; stavam prayer ; nāmnām of names ; sahasram a thousand ; paṭalam paṭala ; tathā so ; paddhatim paddhati ; sūrya-vaṁśendra O king of the Surya dynasty ; pañcāṅgāni the five parts ; viduḥ know ; budhāḥ the wise.

Translation

The wise know that the five parts of pañcāṅga worship are: 1. kavaca, 2. stava, 3. sahasra-nāma, 4. paṭala, and 5. paddhati.
